by honest, i'd like the good (if any) and the bad aspects pointed out. i took these photos yesterday for a friend of mine. it took awhile for this girl to get comfortable with having her photos taken, but by the end of the shoot, she was doing cartwheels for me.

In the first 2 I don't think the girl look comfortable. Its better in the last 2.
In the first one there is something on the left side of her face.
The last one is my favorite though I am not sure I like the crops.

I like #1 and #4. As tommy said she dosnt look very comfortable in the first one but I like the DOF and the flowers/grass in the foreground and background.

#1: she looks a bit nervous, there is also something on her left cheek. I think there was too much negative space on top of her head. Would like a touch deeper DOF to see the flowers better, but this is a personal taste issue.
#2: she looks more relaxed as you stated. Still a touch more negative space above her head than I'd prefer. I'd also brighten up her eyes as well for more pop. I'm not a hugh fan of the over exposed look, but again this is a personal taste issue. Lastly, for some reason, I'd prefer to have the flower in front of her more in focus.
Just a quick edit to my taste, dodge eyes, lighten eye, burn, crop.

#3: Nice composition. Same thing about negative space and eyes.
dodge eyes, burn, crop

#4: Nice, she really seems relaxed, I'd consider popping the eyes out more and cropping off the bottom a bit.

thanks tommy for your honest comments. i haven't edited out her scar on the first shot.
and you're right, in the first two i posted, we were just getting her to the point of being comfortable.

thanks teeway on your cropping recommendations. none of the shots have been cropped for the typical 8x10 print size. with the 20D, i've learned to take shots with more negative space than i'll use in final printing.
the eyes do pop quite a bit more in my uncompressed files.

thanks flyb0y, i too like the first shot, only wish she looked more at ease. when i took this shot i had to be careful with the flowers, if my DOF was too great they'd end up "growing out of her head"

I LOVE the B&W one! Fantastic! The last one is nice, too. Mostly because she's more comfortable.

As people have already said, she looks uncomfortable in the first two, but looks good in the last two. #3 is my personal favorite, it makes her hair not look as bushy, plus her teeth are a bit...well, I'm at a loss for adgectives.

One more thing: how old is she?

thanks dragos, i took a look at your work and really like alot of your portrait shots.
tomster, that's her hair..and her teeth (typical for a lot of children that age). she's probably 6 or 7, i forgot to ask. thanks for your comments though..i appreciate you taking the time to look:)

My favourite is the black and white. I don't know why, but when people aren't looking at the camera and seem to be in thought, those are my favourites. That and the fact it's black and white.

thanks debby..i have the same leaning, i usually like shots where i'm left wondering what a person was thinking..and i also have a thing about smiles, sometimes i'd prefer a shot without them. and yes B&W can best the "bomb" to quote randy jackson:;

I really like #3, and I'm not a big fan of B&W. Nice composition, very relaxed, natural look to her. #1 & #2 she is too tight, smile isn't natural looking. #1 has flowers growing out of her head. #4 is better but the smile still doesn't look relaxed and natural.
What's #3 look like in color?
