OK, I know everyone does these so I had to try. Some of you may have seen my stuff in Performing Arts, I was driving home and was thinking I need to try one of the light trail shots. I need to add some "other stuff" to my portfolio.
I also took some pics while on the roof of the venue I shoot at, they open some big windows where I can shoot down on the artist.

I'd love some feedback.

Lots of artifacts on the first, perhaps it was a tad overexposed. I like the second shot, it looks like a coffee maker on steroids :)

Define..."artifacts" for me. I did have the lens open for a long time, probably too long.

Well, I read that and assumed he was referring to the oncoming headlights being seriously blown out.
It doesn't look bad per se, it just looks out of place with the tailights being so laser sharp.
Could a filter be used to reduce that effect in some way, rather than just recomposing so the oncoming lane is out of shot? Something that would stop as much flare on the left hand side of the shot?
Loving the smoke stack, is it really that shiney?

Yep the stack is that shiney.....
I kinda liked the contrast.....I would think if I shot more "down" on the lights they would not be so blown out. I was at eye level on a tripod.

That first shot would be a cracker with a little less exposure, I really like the composition with the lights, the sign and the bend in the road. What was the exposure time?

Nice shots but yes the first is alittle over exposed....And ok, I too first thought the second shot was a coffee maker :-)

The second pic is a spun aluminum updraft exhaust fan, most likely used for kitchen exhaust.

Thanks for the replies, I'll reshoot the first one this weekend. I don't recall the exposure but I do know it was long. I deleted the RAW file.

How do you do a timed shot and not over expose it? I need to learn how to do these, I just cant wrap my brain around the specifics....

M mode, minimum aperture, then trial and error ;)

Yep I agree, for a shot like this one I would shoot at F22 and start at around 10sec and go from there.......good luck!
Roger.
