Just got the G2 a couple of weeks ago. I'm not an experienced night photographer, but I do have a nice tripod. The shot I want is of the moon rising over the woods behind my house. It would be great if I could get the trees in silhouette with the zoomed-in moon just above them. I tried with several exposures last night and either the moon was too bright or the trees too dark. Is this shot even possible with the G2?

When you set ( or the camera ) sets exposure values for shutter speed and aperture, it is determining how much light hits the sensor. Too much and it will be too light, too little and it will be too dark. It seems that your dark and light areas are too far apart from a brightness standpoint.
Suggestions:
Photoshop the two images you have and combine them into one.
Wait till a time of day when there is less of a difference between the moon and the forground.
Good luck, have fun and experiment. Don't be shy about asking questions here. Someone will have a suggestion.
