View Full Version : I can't take anymore saturation and sharpening

This is a small rant in the belief that some anonymous ranting will be cheaper then therapy.

But seriously, if I see one more landscape picture over sharpened and overly saturated, I'm going to blow a vein in my head. It was bad enough on every national park postcard... and now it's all over the internet.

Sure a real sunset is beautiful, but it's gotta be prettier BRIGHT NUCLEAR ORANGE with PIG BELLY PINK. And a little USM is nice... but.... c'mon!

Watch, someone is going to explain to me how I don't know better - and that is a possibility.

Hey, you know what else? I'm sick of anorexic women. I'm tired of seeing nude models with their rib cages popping out. Just because you can see her ribs and she's out in a foggy meadow doesn't mean it's art. or, well, good art.

I do feel better..

I don't use the saturation slider -there are more subtle tricks.

talk about it or argue? I don't want to argue, besides there's no argument in agreement. ;)

I'm not an innocent guy here. I love looking at women and the less clothes the better, as a matter of fact, I try to spend as much time as possible looking at pictures of naked women - a sort of quality of life issue you might say. I can't get enough!

Skinny girls are okay in the right context, like an awareness campaing for bulemia, but I don't find rib cages and adolescent boyish like figures to be compelling.

haha! I hear ya! I live in japan where girls are very small framed. you talk to one, they think they are soo fat (just like highschool right) then they pop all these pills to lose weight. I swear every japanese girl suffers from some sort of anorexic*ism. really aweful.

as for the last part of my post, I just feel there might be someone who takes it offensivly. not you cuz i was agreeing :) !

I agree with the sentiments ... what I learnt some time ago is sharpness and saturation are friends to those who do not know how to use their equipment. So, some compassion is called for (and perhaps a link to a decent book on exposure). They are also friend to those who have a compulsion to show how 'sharp' their newly aquired L lenses are (while doing the oppositie to anyone with functioning eyes). Whenever you see Duck and L in the same thread title then you must remember not to click and enter. You will be polluted ;-)

I do have a comment on the too skinny ladies.. they worry me, more than that I worry about the impact there going to make on my little sister who's fast approaching those teenage years... and my eight nieces that are one day going to be going through all those adolescent issues that girls have about their bodies... It annoys me that one minute those teenage movie star/singers look like normal healthy young ladies and the next minute theyre in a size 0 and telling everybody that they just 'lost there baby fat'...

You know what's interesting? Adult film models and nude models for men are not skinny, some are, of course, but the skinny ones look like they should be skinny because they're tall.

It's the models that actually model to women that are very skinny, which is terribly ironic isn't it?

Then there's these photographers who do this artsy fartsy crap with super-skinny women thinking that the rib cage adds some sort of ambience to the scene of her standing in a foggy pond.

It's precisely the stuff that a young girl will see that twists what real beauty is.

Eroticism and sexuality are not conveyed by gaunt corpses.

Of all the feminist literature about how damaging adult male 'entertainment' is, you never hear anyone actually point out that young women don't see these cuvry women, it's women's own products, anything marketed toward women (and not men) that use underweight women.

I have shot a duck with my L. I have sharpened a picture. Yes, I possess a velvia CS2 action. Have I learned how to not use them? Somewhat.

My film camera didn't have an anti-alias filter.
My film(s) made some damn fine colours.
Ducks move slow and have nice feathers.

:):):)

However, one thing I have never done is posted a picture with jpeg artifacts. Literally the BLASHPHEMY of photography. All that money on nice glass and a body and you are afraid of a 300k file?

I'm so glad to hear someone else with the same point of view as my own. The current media trend representing emaciated women as "sexy" is disturbing. I'm a teacher in a high school, so I have to hear all these little anorexic girls who look like lollipops with their big heads and tiny bodies moan and groan about gaining a pound. Most of the boys, on the other hand, make comments about these girls needing a good meal.
And I know what you mean about tall models being called skinny. I'm pretty tall for a woman and weigh 140 pounds, but I'm always referred to as "skinny" by others. I prefer to think of myself as normal. I wish my students would feel the same way about themselves.

You know, I don't understand women like that! If they're trying to attract men, maybe they should be listening to what the men are saying, and not the fasion mags they read!

As to the other point of this thread, I just went back to my C&C post and noticed that my landscape pics are both oversaturated!!! WTF?! I know they weren't anywhere near that way when I posted them. Maybe I'm converting colorspaces incorrectly? It was embarrassing! To see what I'm talking about, go here (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=161889).

So maybe others are having the same problem? I don't normally use sRGB colorspace, and apparently the conversion process is harder than I thought.

so annoying!

In seriousness,
As I have said before here, Im not much of a photographer but I do have a good few yrs ps experience, The main problem seems to be with the post processing stage and using brightness/contrast settings... This is the most inefficient way to lift an image, always use curves or levels, just by setting the correct levels the saturation will likely be increased and need toning down. But ultimately it's all in the eye of the beholder.
Callibrated monitors also help :)

so recap.. brightness/contrast slider=bad
curves or levels=good

Skinny women are not my thing, I like a lady with some padding - just thought I would share that with everyone :D

Oh.. now... would you have posted it if it was seen as oversaturated and over-sharpened?

It's a great picture and not really what I am talking about. I was referring to broad landscapes. And I'm notcing this really on any image with a sunset/rise. Check out nature pictures on photo sig for an example of Chernobyl Orange and rose pink glowing in placid waters.

It's just cheap to me. Like shoving a skinny frail woman into a blurry scene and calling it art.

See, it's funny, because people spend a lot of money on oversaturated and oversharpened pictures and skinny women huddled in dark corners. I want to be a pro - do I need to pander to these people to make any money?.. Probably not, but I bet I will once or twice!

Did I say nice picture already? Great picture.

Hi Liza. I was looking at a photography book of women, a large one, one of those 100 dollar coffee table books. It was great. In the middle were two pictures that took up the left and right sides.

The left side had a famous porno actress on it. A very cute, smiley blonde in a bikini (what else?) with a big chest, white teeth, leaning on a tan muscle man as she leaned over to pull a strap up on her sandals. It was sunny and the actress and male model were surrounded by flowers and plants at a set that was at, where else?, a pool.

On the right side was a famous fashion model. The picture was taken in black and white and the model was very pale and gaunt, looking down, of course, with an open shirt. Through her open buttons you could see her STERNUM. The actual bones connecting to her STERNUM. Is that sexy?

And, like I mentioned, this contrast was striking to me as I realized that models for women look sickly and models for men look fleshy, curvy, healthy, and beautiful. Also, models for men are varied, from portly to skinny, from brown to white, from short to tall, from flat chested to obnoxious, etc. The models for women are all the same: beautiful, skinny, high cheek bones and white, or half white and something else, and boobs are optional.

I'm just thinking out loud. All photo sites have a large supply of female pictures, from faces, to legs, from the erotic to the familiar. Female beauty is obviously a large asthetic value, but it doesn't seem like it's discussed much. Too bad, because I think a lot of people are misintrepreting an attempt to market a shirt versus what people actually prefer seeing.

And among women, there is greater social acceptance of the beautiful, of gaunt, runway model then there is a Playboy model or any run of the mill bikini model. It's classy versus trampy. It's no wonder beautiful, healthy women are only seen in male marketed erotica.

Well... I don't know per se. the coloring seems to sort of work within the context of the composition - in my opinion. Perhaps too much orange, but it's a matter of opinion. But this is not a complex scene, this is just sky, trees, water. What is there to draw your eyes too but the color? Here, I think the saturation is an artistic flair more then it is a cheap way to just produce a nice landscape picture.

Not that I don't think it might be a little too much, perhaps less green in the trees would make that sky work better, I don't know, this is just opinion.

And I'm not just trying to be nice either. I think it works here. Head over to photosig.com and check out some of the pictures there. You'll know right away what I mean (or look at a postcard next time you're at a park, or look at some calendars...)

There's nothing wrong with sharpening images nor using saturation though i've never used the latter. What is wrong is when people fall in to the trap of thinking that those are the saving grace of a shot. Not true

I've spent a small fortune of late having my prints done at a pro lab, and i know one thing for sure. web shots don't say much, people say look how sharp my shot is, or look how sharp my shot is-no sharpening. About the print size of a large posted note and good for web use nothing more.

The skinny models work for mainly male designers, shot by mainly male photographers.

Men do play a large part in perpetuating the myth that a women have to be beautiful to be interesting

I think the style of the shot you want will say how much sharpening or saturating is needed, if any at all. Having said that, I'm a terrible photographer so pretty much anything is better than my stuff.

As for the female models... I hate that skinny dead white vampire crap. Unless we're talking about a theme that attempts just that (I'm picturing Kate Beckinsale in Underworld). I have two daughters with one already talking about being fat and needing to diet and get strange haircuts etc. In reality she's already a perfect girl becoming a teenager. But she sees all this crap on TV, magazine and in SCHOOL!

And lets not forget about the male models either. Some of these guys resemble female models more than a guy. They can be just as bad as the women...

Jon.
