I am going on an extended weekend trip to Prague next weekend.
I am going to take my 20D with my 16-35 f/2.8L with me. I only want to bring one lens. I could take my 24-70 f/2.8L instead but I am thinking it might not be wide enough.
Does anybody have good suggestions on things to see and photograph, I have never been there before so know absolutely nothing.

Take both lenses if it's at all possible.
If i was going back i'd definitely want coverage from wide up to 70 or so.
You'll find yourself very close to the buildings, particularly if it's busy so the wide end of things is a must and you'll need longer for the usual shots down the river from the Charles Bridge etc...
I only had a 300D + 18-55 when i was there last time (2004) and the range was almost perfect.
As for what to shoot, that's a thread in itself. I'd suggest typing Prague into the PBase search engine. You'll get some good ideas on there.
Enjoy your weekend, it's a fantastic city and very cheap to eat & drink if you avoid the city centre ;)
I've got a small gallery on PBase Click! (http://www.pbase.com/geoff_hubbert/czech_republic_pics)

I hear You on the bring both. However I want to travel light. I actually considered buying a Powershot S3 IS or a IXUS 800 IS if they were available before leaving. Now I am "forced" to bring my 20D

be weary of pick-pockets, of which i've heard stories of from my mates that have been. also, if you can, try and avoid those awful Brittish stag parties that are so popular ( and unpleasant ) there. they are a rowdy bunch of b-bandits. i have no idea what to shoot or where to go as I have never been but the architectures looks great from what i have seen : ( it is on my list of places to go also.... i'd like to see the pics you get there : )

They are filming the new James Bond in Prague at the moment. Might be busy in some streets!

If there wouldn't be chance to take both then I would go with 16-35. As far as what to see there are few "must see" places. One of them are definitely Hradcany. This is castle... well... it's whole part of city anyway with castle, small streets, churches etc. above Prague. It's less then 30min walk over Charles Bridge (Karlùv most) up to hill. Then you have whole old part of city which is really great too. It's not all that big so you can easily walk around and there will be lot to see, so I'm sure you will have great time.
For more info you can also check this http://************/47ade page. I was about to go to Prague again coming weekend too, but we changed our minds and will leave it for one of weekends later this spring :)
And have fun there :)

Like primoz say you should go to see the castle. I haven't been inside, but there is a great view over the city for some nice pano's.
You should really consider bringing a pod (at least a table stand). The bridge and the old square are lit up at night and are great for long exposures. To bad you couldn't get the S3, IS would have been excellent for this.
The old square are always filled with tourists and its a nice place for shooting candids.
The subway is also nice with all the communist artwork and decorations.
If you have the time i suggest visiting http://www.fotoskoda.cz/default.asp?ids=356&idm=312&lang=eng. Its an excellent photo shop (don't let the name fool you) located in the middle of Wenceslas square. They have a very large collection of new and used lenses and equipment. I bought a used canon 1.4ex for Kr. 1.200 the last time i visited.
Enjoy :)

I'd forgotten about the walk up the hill to the castle. It was a red hot August day when we did it and lets just say we drank enough Budvar afterwards to float a battleship
If you have time to visit any other places then Karlovy Vary is worth a look too. I always visit there as i usually go by car and stock up on cheep booze at the huge Tesco just outside the centre

That was easier said that done. I have visited or phoned 8 shops this afternoon. Noone had a S2. One shop could get one for tomorrow but at a really high price I did not want to pay. And curiously enough one shop had a S1 !
So I guess I have to do with my 20D + 16-35

Good link, but it is not complete without U Fleku (http://www.pragueexperience.com/places.asp?PlaceID=368)!
Definitely a place to go to when it's a nice sunny day.
Best regards,
Andy
