Very sad, we've had a couple of close call this weekend in Auckland with a GT3 coming within inches of the front row seats, and then a Falcon hitting a barrier sending debris into a photographer breaking his leg.

Condolences to his family and friends. :(

That's the small risk for doing something we love.. Whether it's track/safety crew or as a photographer close to the track.

Tragic. Marshals give so much to our sport with very little reward and often little thanks. Someone on another forum I use has a signature which reads "marshals make the cars go round" - Very true.

My deepest sympathy to his friends and family.

Course workers are every bit as vital to our sport as the race teams themselves. Sometimes we forget the risks that go along with their job, as well as the risks that we photographers are also subject to. Any fatality hurts our sport and must be used as a learning tool to make things safer for all involved.

Sincere condolences to family, friends and fellow competitors.

Definitely the right place for it i think Dave. I linked the the story on the MSV site at the end of my Croft post.

It's tragic without a doubt, but i should think everyone who volunteers to do that job knows and accepts the risk that it could happen to them. Fortunately it's very rare.

As already said, i'm sure all our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at Oulton Park. It must be so much harder to deal with an incident when it's one of your fellow workers involved.

I am particularly saddened as I happen to know the marshal. These are very special people who turn up weekend after weekend in all weathers, for no pay, just so drivers can race, the public can watch, and we can take pictures of the events. I have always held our marshals in the highest regard and a lot of them are personal friends.

This is the second marshal lost in that area of the circuit to a bike incident, the first a few years ago. It takes a lot to flip a car over the barrier, but a bike can readily fly over the Armco like a very heavy and deadly missile. Bike photographers should bear this in mind next time they are trackside.
