I have a 380 ex speedlite, but it is not mentioned in the d30 manual as one that is recommended. Is it adequate for on camera use with this camera?

Also, I have a Novatron 400 studio light set. Postings here indicate that the voltage may damage the camera. Novatron can adjust my light power pack, but that means boxing, sending, paying, etc. Canon's customer support suggested a flash slave... does anyone have comments or suggestions?

If a slave is necessary... type, price etc. would be helpful. Thank you for all of the info.

I use a Wein IR tigger.
I have the "meter mate" pluged into the D30
I attach it to the camera with velcro.
(About 80.00)
I then have a receiver on my mainlight (not sure how much that was - seems like about 90.00. - maybe less) My other heads are on regular slaves, tripped by the mainlight. But if you're using a multihead power pack all you need is one.

Get them here.

You can use the light system, but you should be using somthing like a safe sync between the camera and the sync cord or an electronic radio slave to go wireless. this way you will not get voltage feedback into your camera. If your voltage spikes back into the camera over and over, it will cause sync failure.

If you can justify the cost PocketWizard kit is a very good solution.

I use the Pocket Wizard with the D30 and it works great. My primary reason for using the PW wasn't the sync issue. I tend to get very tangled in cords and one fewer cord REALLY makes a big difference.

Now I am just waiting to find a good reason to get the Sekonic 608!

380Ex should be fine. 550EX is almost always recommended if you can afford it as there is little to be desired in that flash. But if ETTL is what you are after, the 380EX will be fine with the D30.

ETTL is really flawed in the lower end Canon's - the ETTL-II finally works in the newer MKII's.
