It's my first prime and I need some advice. I have all L glass, 16-35mm to 300mm.

I need to shoot outside kids shots mostly in park settings. Typically light is not a problem. I have the 1D & 20D body. I am considering the 50mm 1.4 and the 85mm. I don't want to have to get so close up that I make the kids feel uneasy and with no experience with primes I would love any advice you can offer.

85, maybe even longer like the 135. If light's not a problem, maybe your (I assume there's one in your stable) 70-200 would be a good choice. The zoom will mean you're not so obviously chasing after them to get the framing right.

85 f1.2L II sounds like it'll do just fine for this job.:)

Yes, I have the 24-70 and acutally 2 of the 70-200 (one non-IS, don't ask ). So is it correct to assume that the 50mm are used mostly for still shots (in general of course)?

Rum, thanks but did you see the price...whoa, unless I need a 179 deduction on the taxes I have to wait as I will only shoot a small portion of my business with these shots. I usally shoot action. I have not looked at the reviews yet on the new 85mm F1.2L II but it must be good to warrenty the price!

Haha, yeah, it's steep. I just figured that since you stated that you have all L glass that it may be in your price range. The 85 f1.8 would be my next choice...and only 1/6th the price.;)

Like Jon said, the zooms you already own makes more sense for shooting kids in the park. The 50 and 85 are better suited for more static subjects than kids running wild, unless you plan on doing a lot of cropping in pp ;)

Try setting one of your 70-200 at 50mm or 85mm all day without zooming, this should give you a rough idea.
