I have tickets to Philadelphia/Buffalo game on Wednesday, and I will be seated in the 3rd row, of the upper level. Unfortunately, I'll be behind the safety netting as well.

I was thinking of taking my 20D & 70-200 f/4L + 1.4x TC, but I didn't know if it would be a waste of time. Being that far up, and with the netting, I'm guessing I won't have many great photographic opportunities.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks.

I didn't take my gear with me as it is really crowded and you are so far away. The play goes on quickly and you really don't know if you can cover such a wide area. Leave the stuff at home and bring the little handheld t.v. for commentary. :)

the game, probably not... but they have no problems with you coming on down front during warmup and taking shots of your favorite players then. I know it's not the same thing... but its better then nothing.

I have season tickets to the Caps and always leave my gear at home and I'm the kind that always has a camera around my neck.

Problem 1: My seats are too close ( 2nd row on the ice between center ice and the goal) so the waves in the plexi ONLY let me take shots that are pretty much directly in front of me.

Problem 2: They limit lense size to 6" or something silly. I made it in a couple times with my Sigma 70-300 before I decided it wasn't worth it. Chances are that any lense worth taking and using in that lighting will be waaaay over the size limit

Problem 3: At least with the close seats is that the action moves way to fast, or I move too slow.

Check with the arena's camera Policy. At Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, they don't allow any camera w/ a focal length longer than 50mm...

Thanks everyone.

Looks like I'm going to leave the gear @ home, and watch my team implode live.

I went to a game earlier this year where I ended up behind the netting. I did take my camera and a long lens. No issues getting it in to the arena as I had called and made arrangements for that. Trying to shoot through the netting was a hassle and wished that I had left the camera at home.

I tried moving around the arena a bit but this wasn't very easy to find a good spot that you could stand for awhile without the security guys asking you to move.

Enjoy the game
