When is someone going to publish a list of error codes for these cameras. It's almost impossible to determine what is wrong with the camera when it displays an error code. Also, are the error codes the same for the D30, D60, and 10D?
If not, Why, I'd like to think that Canon has some continuity with this stuff.
Someone says,"I get error code 99, and my camera won't work", what does that mean?
Sorry, just sounding off. Had a long rainy weekend, and all I really wanted to do was shoot butterflies.

I think most of the Canon error codes are consistent. "Error 99" is a typical response from a computer system that encounters an "unexpected error". That means that they have messages like Error 1, Error 2, Error 3 to cover the problems that they expect to have through normal user mistakes and normal failure mechanisms. Then, the things that happen that the design programmers really could not expect are all lumped together into Error 99.
A typical situation is when a camera tries a dialog with a lens and gets gibberish or a non-response. The design programmers had used only perfectly functioning Canon lenses, so they never had a corrupted dialog.

Thanks, Robert, that clears things up a bit. Wasn't having much luck searching for what Error 99 was :) I guess it's like a segfault on a UNIX machine. It doesn't tell you much, only that something's gone wrong.

I think if you search this site you will find a lot of discussion about Error 99.

I tried to search for Canon 10D error codes and didn't have any luck. Perhaps I'm not very good at searching.
Maybe some "learning" is in order.

From page 171 of the 10D manual:
Err 01 - Clean the lens contacts
Err 02 - Ther is a problem with the CF card...
Err 04 - The CF Card is full...
Err 05 - Something is obstructing the built-in flash....
Err 99 - Ann error other than the above...
Has anyone else experienced any other error codes?

I searched for " Err 99 " and found a whole bunch.

I posted here a while ago a very unique solution to a err99 problem I had and it WAS NOT a sigma lens thing. Do a search and you will find it.

You mean this...
"ERR 99 SOLUTION!
Take note 10D owners. I found the solution to this particular Err99 by posting on DPreview and someone had the same problem.
Seems to be an obvious glitch with the camera or software. The solution to my problem was to do a "SENSOR CLEANING" function from within the MENU. Take the lens off, do sensor clean (But I didnt have to actually clean it!) then just turn it off and back on with a lens. Bingo, it worked. I wish I knew this at the wedding today, I wouldnt have had to shot 75% of the wedding on the e10.
While I ran the CLEAN SENSOR function I looked at the sensor and it looked clean! So I dont know whats up, but after running that simple function the camera went back to normal. Nothing else had worked. Canon needs to solve this problem which is obviously a glitch."
It never worked for me...Error 99 is a catch all error code anyway. Err 99 encompasses a broad range of problems so I don't think this can be considered a solution. Maybe worth a try though.
By the way your Wedding photography is excelent!

Add Error 20 to the list. I dont really know WHAT it is since when I talked to Canon Service they wouldnt tell me, but it did involve a lens with a sticky diapragm and a D30 that had that and maybe other problems.

Just curious, anyone who uses microdrives - do you delete all images or re-format when you are done with a full drive?
I always re-format as it only takes a few seconds
ALWAYS format all media after transferring images. It cleans out all the extra garbage, giving you the most room for images, plus it deletes all those extra subdirectories so you have to remember where you left off.

Even after sending my 10D to Canon, I still get an occasional Err 99. I find the only way to keep it from recurring over and over is to pop up the built in flash and take a single shot with the flash on. After that the Err 99 goes away for some time.
It would be interesting to know how many people have recurring "Err 99"s. As I've state before in other threads, mine seems to occur about 1 percent of the time.

I have not had any problems as of yet with the Err99, but the two that keep coming on the LCD of our D30 is Err80 and Err82. This camera is used in my yearbook class and we can't afford the time to send it to the service center for repair. Any one have some ideas?

Error Code 6 Sensor Clean
See your Canon Authorized repair center
I have found that this code can be cleared by removing both batteries.
