So I ordered my 30D from B&H yesterday and when I told my wife she asked, " I thought you were'nt going to get a new camera, I thought you said it wasnt much better than yours?" ... then she looks at me with a puzzled look on her face and says.. " Is this a Penis thing?" I wasn't expecting that so I didnt know what to say, so I thought it through and finally said, Yes... Yes it is!
She didn't know what to do since I obviously didn't give the answer she was expecting, so she told me ... "clean off your desk, it looks like a bomb went off on it" then walked away.
Does that mean she won???
lol, I guess that is why I love her!

A 30D is a pretty good jump from a 350D , and you shgould get reasonable resale on the 350D - so it's not that bad, truthfully - is it...?
Tho if you did promise not to get one and then you did, you are toast, and a reciprocal 'present' would be in order!
Do you think she might like your old 350D?

A friend's husband recently went on a short (less than 1 week) business trip to North Carolina. Upon his return, and much to his wife's amazement, he announced he'd bought a house. Mind you, they currently live in Washington (state, not DC), had just put a bunch of $$$ into remodeling their house, and, as far as the wife was concerned, had no plans of relocating.
Luckily for him, and their continued union, the purchase was contingent to inspection, and the house apparently failed inspection with flying colors.
After hearing this, my wife quickly turned to me and said I could buy any lens I wanted to without worry. If I bought a house without telling her, I'd be in trouble. :)
Isn't it nice to have friends to measure up against?

When I bought my 500, not only my wife, but her friends as well were asking me if it was a penis thing. I as well gave them a simple yes answer, and that shut there friggin pie holes for them. Catch them off balance and they will become confused and disoriented. Don't push it again though by buying another expensive photography toy b/c you may become the next Wayne Bobbitt in the news. lol.. im on my second, I like to think of the first marriage as a "Training Mission". She is totally cool with my photography and is constantly trying to encourage me to do something with it. She bought me supplies for christmas like papers and inks and such, she is allways telling me how great this looks or how much she likes that when looking at my work and she always hauls out the photoalbum of my shots when we go to family functions!
As for the 350D, A sale is pending to a member here.. if, for some reason it fails to go, I will re-post it. I hate to sell it as I really do like that camera allot but.... I might not have the chance to buy a 30D for a loooooong time again so I gotta get it now. As for her? My wife loves to point out shots but not take em.. but when she does get her hands on the camera, i have to fight her to get it back...lol
She is a feisty one Condyk, but thats why I like her. we go together quite nicley!

I think the whole wife thing is hysterical. When I announce that I'm going to buy something, my wife acts as if we won't be able to feed the children for a month because of it. Then after I get it (I ALWAYS get what I want) she asks me if I'm done yet...lol. Yeah right.
For the record, my kids eat very well and NEVER go without. That's not my style. She was ok when I suprised her with a Canon A530 for Easter, and a Panasonic mini-DV camcorder for Valentines day.

I think you won that contest my friend. She was caught out by your reply and had to think fast to get some sort of comeback line, hence the 'clean your desk'. It definitely smacks of a "boy and his little toys mentality" that many women seem to throw at their male partners. Angie has reacted the same way here when I've eyed the 1D mark IIn over my 1D, and said the same things - boys toys. It's funny, Angie doesn't nag her husband, but she nags me. Are there any anti nagging tablets that you can slip a woman to stop them from nagging you?

As for my wife, I'm Extreme III lucky. I can buy whatever I want, whenever I want it, as long as I can afford it. In fact, she encourages me. And she never tells me to clean my desk. I do that without being told. All right, my cleaning lady does and I take the credit for it.

I like to downplay it a little sometimes. I psyched my wife for nearly 4 mths (that's how long it took for me to save for it anyway) before I got the 1D2N and when I did get it she was pretty cool about it.. A week later I got the 70-200IS and hoped she didn't notice the size difference between the f4L and the IS. Over the weekend I passed her the camera to shoot our daughter and me, and she didn't seem to notice the difference. If she didn't notice the difference then the difference is too small to mention right? :p

After getting some small, inconspicuous black primes that look very much the same, I am now curious to see if an 85/1.2 L might go unnoticed in between the 17/3.5, 30/1.4, 50/1.4 or if I'd rather limit myself to the 85/1.8 instead... maybe I could convince my wife that I got an improved lens hood

Zacker, you are hands down the winner here. You got a new camera and all you had to hear was a wise crack about your manhood and clean your desk. Hell, Sunday I told my wife that I wasn't going to play golf, then I ended up playing (just 18 holes and $30 not a new 30D and $1,400 like you) and I am cutoff for at least a week and had to sweep and mop the floors. Good job, bro.

Considering the discussion going on in this thread, I thought I would ask this question. I am about to move my family into a brand new house on 3 acres of land where my wife has been wanting to move to ever since we met 12 years ago. Do you think she will let me purchase the 100mm Macro f/2.8 now? :)

But look at the bright side - with all that needing to be done, you wouldn't have been able to use it even if you had got it, and that'd be still worse than not getting it.

In all seriousness, I'm going to end up telling her when she gets back from her business trip this week. She just asked me if I wanted the 1d mkIIn for our upcoming anniversary. She's so thoughtful. I didn't have the heart to tell her that I already got it. Maybe I can get away with having two! No. I couldn't possibly take advantage like that. Well, maybe.... What is it called when a woman wants the latest and greatest? its not a penis thing.... would it be penis envy? or is it something else? Hmmmmm I definetly understand that the real reason allot of people (esp us guys) buy the bigger, flashiest, faster and newr.. it is definetly ego... Males are driven by Ego .. no doubt about it, I do admit it. BUt what makes a woman want all that? Like the new shoes or the rich handsome man, or the trendy new bag? I know she has to impress her friends so thats kinda egotistical but is there other reasons?

One way I have found to keep my wife from getting upset at me for spending $$$ on new camera gear when I already have too much is for me to buy her something very expensive and extravagant, i.e. jewellery, which she loves. Hey I think you may be on to something here. B&H should sell a "ring lens mount kit". Think about it. You have a big honkin piece of glass that cost a lot of money... mount it on a ring and tell your wife its made of diamond... wink, wink. She'll be lovin the fact that its bigger than any of her friends rings. Convince her that the black tube is a fancy new European style mount that her friends don't have yet. Imagine how proud she'll be when she reaches for a cup of punch at the PTA meeting with an 85mm f/1.2 ring on her finger!
If we could get this to catch on, we'd be having the wives begging us to buy "them" a new lens... I mean ring.
Hmmm.... that probably won't work for a 600mm f/4 though. I've got it. How about a new high-tech rolling pin for the kitchen. It will be the bomb this time of year for making apple pie crusts in preparation for Thanksgiving. Its so heavy that they won't have to put forth a lot of effort to get it to flatten the dough.... not like those old cheap wooden rolling pins. "I'm only thinking of you, honey!"

There's the rub. My wife will glady let me buy whatever I want, even if I've managed to talk myself out of it. She's the devil, really.
