Just to educate my self: should these be considered as macro shots: http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=162352?

I think generally macro refers to at least 1:1 ratio between actual size of subject and the image it produces on the film plane. Going on the scale reference you provided (ie. fingers in shot #3), I would class the first 2 close-ups as macro.

I guess I'm not then qualified to post pics in Macro Forums, as I don't have any extension tubes or close-up filters to extend the reach of my 100 mm macro - that goes only to 1:1. :(:cry:

Isn't it called micro if you go beyond 1:1?

Errrmmm....
no ??
I wouldn't worry about trying to achieve 1:1 shots because the large number of pixels in modern DSLRs get the extra detail anyway. If you're taking shots within a foot of the subject with your 100mm macro, go ahead and post them!

true racketman, but you could use the 100mm macro for portraits too.

the lens - its in the name! ;)I was earlier kindly advised not to post to macro forums with a close up (then with a good reason ;)), so it is not the lens I guess.
(Don't take me wrong, no hard feelings, just trying to learn.)

I just use a rule of thumb that if you can see detail in the shot when viewing it on your PC screen that you cannot see with the naked eye then it's a macro shot. I would guess that probaby 50% of the shots posted here are shot at less than 1:1 magnification.
So I would have considered your lixzard shots as macros.

Brian VThis sounds like a very sensible rule, Brian. Thanks for commenting.

to me if it is a 1:1 "macro" lense it is macro. - images tou can see alot of detail in and up close as in microscopic.
