should i still buy the 400 5.6L to cover my longer range with the said prime

or

should i opt for th 100-400 4.5-5.6L IS

Note however that I already have the 70-200 2.8L IS

Please, your thoughts if I still need the 400 5.6L

Are you into birding?

Answer is 1.4x tc... gives you 420mm/5.6 with IS without noticeable loss of image quality.

Yes , you NEED it!
I'm gunna get a 300 f4 one day. It's the close focusing that apeals to me.
Big factor in my decision to get the 400 was that I can't afford a 600 F4. So the 400 with a 1.4TC will be my longest reach.
I'm not very good at reading between the lines , so not sure if you are alluding to something different with your birding comment , but if it is birding you are into , you'll always want more reach , so maybe consider bypass the 400 , use a TC on the 300 and wait till you can afford the Sigmonster!

So that when you throw on a 1.4xTC, there is not too much image quality lost and give you space for cropping.
But to get a 500+mmf8 with the 300 means stacking of convertors, not good for image quality.

I second that. In fact that's my plan.

My EF 300 f4L IS will hopefully be arriving today. :D

Also, the coverter works great on your 135L (bet it would work great with your 70-200 too) if you're looking for high magnification close up shots. The converter is a nice tool to have, especially if you have a lot of primes. I'm curious to see how well it works with the 300.

EDIT: It's here, it's here, IT'S HERE! :D :D :D

My solution is to use the 300 f/4 with a 1.4x and jump over the 400mm to get a 500mm. With the 300/500 combination and the 1.4x I end up with 300mm, 420mm, 500mm, and 700mm.

I don't know how well it will work but I plan on also getting the 2x to get 600mm and 1000mm.

Exactly what I was thinking except for the fact that 500 is so darned expensive and the 400 f5.6 is so darned compact..

With the 300 f4 L IS and your other glass, you're pretty covered from 420 mm down. I suggest you leapfrog the 400s and go for the real big white - 500 f4 L IS.
