Yesterday, I was faced with the toughest decision of my life. My first greyhound had to put to sleep due to wide spread cancer. Just wanted to post my favorite picture that I have ever taken.

It's a hard thing to do, I had to face the same course of action a few yrs back with my Alsation, never a more loyal dog.
You were strong enough to do what was right for the animal for what that's worth.
Sorry for your loss.

You don't know how attached you really are until that moment comes...so sorry for you....People that don't have that attachment never understand it...I'll be thinking of you both...

I noticed you said son, which means you were very close to your dog. We call our dogs our "boys". Almost 4 years ago now we had a Shih Tzu puppy who's collar got hung up around a gate that kept him in the kitchen. It was a horrible day, so much so that my wife and I called in sick the next day. We only had him for about 2 months so I can only begin to imagine how a longer partnership could change the feelings you have. I am sorry for your loss, but am glad to see that you have some nice photos and memories.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. We have a 9 year old German Shepherd and he means as much to me as my daughter's do. It will be one of the saddest days of my life when we have to put him down. Once again I'm sorry about your loss.

He'll be waiting somewhere on the otherside for you when he'll finally let you catch him.

Those of us with "kids" of our own feel your pain. Sorry for your loss. Your excellent photo will serve as a lasting tribute to his legacy.

Sorry for your loss. We lost our Princess last year after 13 years. She was a Golden Retriever who helped raise our children. I really understand what you are going through. Best wishes to you.

I am sorry for your loss. You did the right (very hard ) thing. I too, have had similar experiences. Tincture of time is the best medicine.

Good looking dog. I have a cat that is 17 years old. He's so slow at going up the stairs that I wonder how much time he has left. I've had him since I was 9. Its going to be tough when the little buddy is not around anymore. Sorry for your loss.

Sorry to hear about your loss. What I really like about this shot is you can almost feel the dog staring at you, so life-like.

Aww. Sorry to hear. We used to have a dog and he finally got so sick my parents had to put him to sleep. I was only 7 and they were worried I would take it really bad, so took a while before they told me. I also got a photo of him framed and in my room.

That's a fine shot, my condolences for your loss. I've only had to put one of my pets (pet rat, named Arwen) to sleep, and it was the hardest thing I could do. I got to hold her and watch her fade away, but it was the best thing for her - I'd spent a month hand feeding her and giving her water as she had a suspected pituitary gland tumour. She was only 16 months old, she was far too young to die.

Best wishes,

Dave

Sorry to hear about your dog. A few years back, we had a 10-year old Chocolate Lab/Weimaraner, Hershey, who the vet told us had fatty tumors that were nothing to worry about and were supposedly common among both breeds. Well, turns out it was malignant cancer that had spread from her collar bone to her liver, which one day ruptured. When we found her, we knew we had to take her in and have her put down. Rough rough day. Unfortunately she hated the camera and I wasn't shooting much then unless it was the occasionally film shot (which was few and far between), so she doesn't have many good photos.

Then in January of this year, we lost 2 dogs within 2 weeks. The first was Max, a white lab. He loved the camera. He didn't have anything wrong with him, the vet told us he was just old. He was awesome. He would come over to you and lay his head on your feet or in your lap. He wouldn't force you to pet him, but his eyes would just say "Love me please."

The second was Ellie, a 5 year old chocolate Lab. The most hyper dog I think I've ever had. You walk outside, she goes for her rope. "THROW IT!" She died of an enlarged heart.

So very sorry for your loss. It's never an easy decision to make. We do have that responsibility though. I've had 5 Airedales in my life and 3 times when that dreaded day came, I had to make that decision too.

It never gets any easier and for me, in fact it just gets harder each time. But the joy that they bring for the short time we are blessed with their companionship makes it all bearable to me.

Again, I am very sorry for your loss.

Sorry for your loss. We had to put our 6 yr old black lab top sleep Jan 2005 because of seizures. The thing that makes it a little better is that when I had a film slr the first and last shot of every roll would be of her (gotta be sure the film is loaded, and have to finish this roll and get it processed) so we have pictures all over the place.

Thanks for sharing that. Quite a comfort I would think.
