This is such a versatile lens. I use it with extension tubes or a teleconverter all the time. So much so that I hardly ever it use it "plain".

You should head down the Backbay trail in Irvine with that thing. There is always a bunch of ducks and other birds. I even saw some small ducklings yesterday.

I've rented this lens along with the 1.4 tele and am just learning my way with it.

Without any PP other than a resize, I must say that the sharpness of this shot has me blown away:

And this is sort of like a 200% crop... I did a 100%, and then cropped it even more, and it still looks pretty sharp to me. I can even see detail on the birds' wings.

Thank you Patrick. We are far enough away to just have the odd sway, but my brother and sister both live in Christchurch...both fortunately in parts that weren't too badly hit, though my brother lost a chimney and a whole lot of loose stuff.

He heads out to the eastern suberbs with his barrow and shovel after every new aftershock to help shovel up the silt...depressing stuff for those poor people.

Ricardo, I wish your family and the people affected by this well. Having been affected tremendously by Hurricane Wilma, I know how devastating these things can be, and earthquakes scare me more than just about anything. Luckily, that's the one natural disaster we don't get in Florida.

Here's another couple of shots, using the 300L and 1.4 tele. I'm going to hate to have to return them on Tuesday, but they're rentals. This is definitely my lens choice for the future though.....just as soon as I can save up enough to buy them. The sharpness and detail just blow me away, even with the tele on.

Very pleased with the results from this lens, but I am finding the AF a bit slow compared to my other lenses. I think after the summer I may send it in for a service to see if that improves matters.

I found this lens a bit disappointing when I got it. However, I have come to the conclusion that it is my fault if it fails - as it can surprise me as it did with this shot of a water lily in the middle of a large pond.

If you click on the photo number under the photo, it will take you to his flickr page. You should be able to get to the exif in the "actions" dropdown, or else, just click on the photo, and then on the right side, click on where it shows the camera used. That will open up the exif.

And I agree. Very cool shot. I can't wait until I have enough saved up to buy this lens.

The Wilds is a pretty cool place isn't it? My wife and I went there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Not something you would expect in the middle of nowhere in Southern Ohio.

it's too heavy Ricardo but the IQ is excellent. But, I still prefer this lens due to it's weight and versatility. We can lug this around with no problems unlike the 400....forget about it. Post some pics down under will ya?

Will do as soon as I can...kinda busy at present earning a few bucks for a longer birding lens!!

I bought my 300 f4 last year, and it's probably my second most used lens. This pic is from last summer, shortly after I bought it; it's been cropped, but no other pp except sharpened for the web by LR.

I've noticed a couple things since I bought the 300mm; 1st, I no longer haunt the classifieds looking for inspiration, and 2nd, I'm getting so little use from my 70-200 f4 IS that I'm considering selling it.
ETA: This lens has also caused me to appreciate shallow DoF and the bokeh much more the previously.

Yup. I don't worry about the IS since my shutter speed is way above the FL. For me, the sweet spot whether bare or with a 1.4xII is @ 5.6...so go out there and shoot and post 'em pics will ya!

I love this lenses. bang for the buck on par with the 85 1.8 and 100 2.8 macro. sure a chunk more change but it never makes you look bad

the next one this might have been the first shot as I had my 17-50 on and switched lenses hoping not to scare of the deer must be why it is at iso 200 1/40th handheld, not sharp enough to print but works well on facebook

It's just the lens at MFD with a slight crop. The original right edge of the photo was kept after cropping and the original center would be the adult's head. So it's a crop of the right side of the photo with the aspect ratio maintained.

Can you please post pictures with this lens hooked up to a 1.4 teleconverter? Maybe it is my imagination, but my pictures seem to be soft when I hook up my KenkoPRO 300 AF DGX 1.4X up to my 300mm lens.

some very inspiring images in this thread...well, that's an understatement still, but I loved looking through tons of samples. Coming from the 300 f2.8, I really didn't know what to expect with the 300 f4 (non-IS flavor for me). What I found was a relatively tiny lens that I am really excited about shooting. Unlike the f2.8, I can see taking the f4 with me on many non sports shoots as its so compact for a lens with that reach. Got some college soccer this coming weekend so I'll give it a go for sports but here's the only image I have shot with it so far...I literally stopped for 5 minutes while driving home just to have an image to test the lens out on since I just got it today...its certainly not my best work but its really just a test snapshot. This is a massive crop as 300mm just won't get you where you need to be for this lighthouse (only a boat will actually).

We're going to the Galapagos in January and as expected I'm losing sleep about what gear to take!
After seeing the shots in this this thread and seen some Flickr examples in the Galapagos I decided to rent this lens and I'm simply blown away by the quality.

Most of the articles I've seen say you don't need a long lens for the Galapagos but as birds will be my primary interest I will almost certainly buy this lens. The short MFD is also a consideration.

This one is from south of Kandahar City, Afghanistan. It's the last little trickle of the Hindu Kush mountain range pushing into the Argendap River Valley.

Was in the area for quite a while, you can see these mountains in quite a few of my pictures. They were convieniently located to my west, for sunset pictures haha.
