Taken with 5D II and Canon 1.4x TC wide open at ISO 800. No noise processing, and only a 36 sharp and 34 details in LR3, which is a welcome relief.

I saw this dove perch on a tree above us while I was playing with my kids in the snow last Saturday so I went inside and grabbed my camera. I was such in a hurry I forgot to attach my 1.4x TC so this is heavily cropped.

Not so pretty with the busy background.

Sandra, mine were doing great until I went off on a trip and allowed our "landscaper" to take care of them (at his place). I came back to a bunch of really sad looking orchids, and they were loaded with snails.

Over watering is not something any plant ever has to worry about with me around. LOL

I was trying to locate some of my old orchid photos (on another site), but couldn't locate them. Oh well!!

Also - thanks Anne. I was going to suggest you reconsider and try orchids again - maybe sleep on it. But we all already know how that works out. :)

Sounds like you can do it long as you don't let the wrong person take care of them while you're gone away someplace. We've had the ones I've been shooting for about four-five years now.

Would y'all please say a little prayer to the camera gods for me. I'm leaving at 4:15 in the morning (is there really a 4:15?) and setting out on a 2 1/2 drive to hopefully shoot Osprey at Blue Cypress Lake. Problem is, they're expecting thunderstorms around 8 a.m., and we have the boat rented for 7 a.m.

And while you're praying, could you pray that the Osprey are there please!!

I've been waiting a year to do this trip, and I'm not going to allow anything to spoil it for me....... not rain........ not even...... never mind.... no birds could definitely spoil the trip.

Anne - Wow ... looks like it was a beautiful day out there. Great shots!

Thanks to you both!! For a day that started out horribly, it turned out to be just amazingly beautiful. From what I heard, by next month, there will be even more Osprey nesting there, and with eggs and soon chicks in the nests, they won't be flying as much, but will allow photographers to get even closer, as they just won't leave the nests at that time.

All I know is it was just one of the most wonderful days I've ever had, and I can't wait to go back there again. Now if only I knew how to drive one of those pontoon boats..

Beautifully detailed shot Mark. While I haven't had an opportunity to work with the close focus yet, I think you're correct in that that's a wonderful feature that many of the other great lenses just can't do.

Doing good, still trying to find the time to shoot more, all my other obligations and hobbies get in the way.

Hope all is well on your end.

I know the feeling. I've gone from having nothing to do, to my life not belonging to me. LOL Otherwise, I'm doing well thanks.

Thanks Anne. I find the 300mm as sharp as anything I've used for close subjects. I'm looking forward to Spring and Summer to try some macro shots on butterflies etc.

I just ordered Manfrotto's version of a Wimberly Head, and hopefully, that's going to help with the macro type shots and might get me to use my tripod.

@Mike I completely concur with the others. Very well done.

@Misty Sandra, I tried using my Kenko 1.4x the other day, and it was a complete disaster. To be fair though, I'm pretty sure I had the settings all wrong. I'm going to keep practicing until I (or the Kenko) gets it right. LOL

Just to add a bit of diversity, from the other end of the avian scale :), here's a shot of a Coaltit I took today using my 300mm and 1.4x TC. I think the 300 and the TC pair really well together, you get 420mm with IS and a close focussing distance (this shot was from 6-8 feet away) and there's not much loss of image quality:

Oh... I'm sure it was user error. I've used the tele before with wonderful results, so I know what it can do. It's just a case of getting used to the new lens and getting the settings correct. The light was pretty bad during the early part of the morning too, and I'm sure that contributed.

Tomorrow, I'll be receiving the Manfrotto version of a gimbal head, so I guess I'm going to have to start using the tripod. LOL

Beautiful loon.

these were taken in Sequoia National Park, which is just an awesome place. This hawk flew into my campsite and posed on a branch for me. He swooped from tree to tree beneath the canopy in shafts of light. Very cool but he was too fast for me to get those shots.

These were taken with my now-gone 50D (getting rid of that body was a mistake as it was considerably sharper than my 7D with 300 prime and TC) and Canon 1.4x II TC.

Okay.. here are some grab shots showing the Gimbal with just the lens on it. So far, the head seems to move quite smoothly in all directions. I didn't want to change the balance for the photos though, because it's off balance with no camera attached, but that seems to work fine too, with camera attached (and my YN flash on top).

There are many different positions this can be used in, including where you want the plate situated. Some people complained that they couldn't get at the control buttons on the lens, because of the two sided configuration of this head, but I just slid the plate back a wee bit and can reach those controls just fine. I know it's hard to see that in these photos though.

People are using this particular head with much larger and heavier lenses, and except for one person, the reviews on my favorite shopping site (starts with an "a") seem really good.

Ha yeah this seems to happen a lot. I Spend a lot of time outdoors from summer to fall, and so these sort of things just happen.

I had a giant cow moose bed down a half foot from my tent in Glacier this summer at two in the morning. At the time I didn't know it was a moose. I woke up to these horrible noises, and realized it was something's digestive system. Then of course came the rough, elephantine breathing. I shot out of my tent and the moose rose on the other side, snorted, then trotted off into the woods. An hour later, after the adrenaline wore off, I fell asleep and was woken by heavy breathing on the my tent wall. The moose was back. I crawled out of the tent, stood, and the moose just stared at me from about three feet away. Then it walked over a log and into the river.

The ground is not a good place to be when a moose is that close. But I have to admit I was glad it was a moose. I thought for sure a bear was sniffing my tent, and in Glacier, they have grizzlies.

O WOW looks great I want one where did you get it what website o Anne thank you for sharing I like it a lot.

@ Tim

I love stones and all sorts of textures. To me, they're always something special.

Since I'm going shooting tomorrow, I went down to the car to put my tripod in the trunk, and just happened to check the pockets of my jacket. Lo and behold, I found my missing 8 gig card from last week. What a nice surprise to find even more Osprey shots.

These are really very heavily cropped, so I think they just prove what an amazingly sharp lens this is. I'm so very happy with mine!!!!

Great shots, eagelssong and Peter. I'm a big fan of ospreys. Such a cool bird. The problem I have is I like to flyfish too, and by far the best osprey opportunities I have is when I'm standing in the middle of a river and they fly along the corridor. Of course I don;t have my big lens with me....

Peter, I just realized today that the Kenko 1.4X that I'm using (the cheaper one with the red dot) does communicate with this lens. The exif doesn't say Kenko, but it lists the 300L plus 1.4X tele. That's great. It didn't communicate with the Tammy.

Wow. I'm a really lazy photographer, and I don't think I'd ever sleep in my car just to get the shot. LOL Guess doing that really pays off though, huh?

For sure. Most of what I photograph is nature, and I don't stay in hotels. I always camp, but in this case there was no convenient campsite to the wildlife refuge, so I slept in the car. The nearest hotel was forty-five minutes away and it's not really worth it. The nearest USFS campsite was an hour.

Campsites almost always are a superior location to hotels and get you to the early morning wildlife with far less driving time. Sometimes that wildlife is next to your tent when you wake up. :)

Peter, I just realized today that the Kenko 1.4X that I'm using (the cheaper one with the red dot) does communicate with this lens. The exif doesn't say Kenko, but it lists the 300L plus 1.4X tele. That's great. It didn't communicate with the Tammy.

Nice that is a very good to know.
