We were wonderin' what's with all the flyby's all about...I caught this bomber in the middle of shootin' the Volcomania down Newport Beach. Would love to see your pics on these classic bombers, Eric.

I was working on my boat and every time they flew over I was scrambling to get my camera so never was really prepared. They were only charging $430for a 30 minute ride.

I'll post in the 100-400 forum.

I haven't had a chance to give it a good try yet Peter. Just downloaded the 30 day free trial. I found a real buy though on amazon. Some guy was selling the entire Topaz suite of software as used, for $85 plus a few $$ for shipping. That's not much more than if I'd just bought the De Noise part by itself, so I jumped on it. He said that he's listed it as used because there's no box or instructions with it, but I can get instructions online. I'm very impressed with the Nik software, and since I had a $10 credit on amazon, even the Viveza wasn't so bad. I have to wait to get the Color Efex Pro though.

Our upcoming trip to Colorado at the end of September is going to be led by Dr. Jason O'Dell. He's written many books on how to use the Nik software, so I'm hoping to learn a lot from him.

Content aware helps to remove unwanted objects and replace them with what it perceives should be there.

What you do is use the lasso and draw a little outside the unwanted object. Once you see the marching ants, you can either go into the edit dropdown, or click ctrl and the F5 key (on PCs..don't know about macs), and that will bring up the content aware fill box (or find it in the edit dropdown where it says "fill), and that's it. Doesn't always work exactly right, but when it does, it's a huge help.

May take a bit of practice, but it's worth it. If you don't like what you see, just undo it in the edit box.

Or else, you can just go here: http://www.photoshopessentials.com/photo-editing/cs5/new-features/fill-content-aware/

It's almost funny to think that I've had photoshop in one form or another for years now, but didn't want to be bothered with hardly any post processing, and now I'm learning more and more each day.

When you can't actually focus and have to guess. That is what you end up with Ricardo. Additionally F32 does not help either.

I like this theme better than the other boat pics because of the lighted ship. The foreground hill is nice but that small boat with the light is distracting. Love that sunset color.

Well, I have pictures of lots of smaller boats, but the theme that seems to attract me most is "solitude", and I am moved to make pictures that in some way or another show this.

From my days of single-handed ocean sailing the sight of a lone ship on the horizon always accentuated the sense of "aloneness" so I guess I'm still affected by those same feelings.

Well, I was supposed to finish my case study but I just can't do it especially when it's nice and sunny day. So instead of hittin' the links (saved me some $$ too..hehehe) I went to the beach and shot the NSSA (National Scholastic Surfing Association) event. The Beach were packed with sunbathers...

Wow thanks. Where is this beach exactly Patrick? These are amazing shots I don't mind making a photo book of these kind of shots just to show to my friends when they visit us or something I can put in my family room so when a friends come over to the house they could look at it. I'de love to that so maybe I will arrange something after our cruise in June. I will let you know.

Nice series Patrick, amazing how these young kids can power through these maneuvers. I was cooking at the air show and not in cool HB!

I rememeber when surfing was judged on the form of the surfer, length of the ride and working the wave all the way to the beach, now it's all about the air. I like to see the stunts but I think I enjoyed the days of the longer more graceful rides working up and down the wave. Now it's all about blasting off the lip which 95% of the time results in a fall Maybe this is a result of the close out waves we tend to get here vs. the long rollers like in Hawaii.

I fully understand your pictures now. At least the harbor ones.

Someday I'll go during Winter to Hawaii but until then I'll take Mavericks and Santa Cruz. Bring on the 20' waves.

Thank you Sandra. I just feel guilty, because he's afraid of me and tends to run when I come out the door. I wish there was a way for him to know I would not hurt him, and that I'm actually glad he's there (as long as he stays outside. They occasionally get inside the house, which doesn't make me very happy).

I know this will sound very weird (although maybe not so much to the animal photographers out there), but even though they can't/don't understand my words, I always try to show my thanks and respect to our animal/insect friends by thanking them (out loud) when they've allowed me to photograph them.

Basically the tour operator will pick us up from the port and drive to Belize zoo it includes food and baboon sanctuary. The owner is a bird watcher and he is recommending a nice place for birds but it is too far out from the port so we decided not to get that one. It is the crooked tree wildlife sanctuary.

I'm OCD about my long and short term plans  I pretty much have my future lens purchases all laid out, according to price and evaluated necessity that is of course, subject to change. So far its:

> Sell current 70-200 (I could get a lot more variety for the price I paid for this one lens.)
> 300 f/4L or 400 f/5.6L
> 135 f/2L
> 70-200 f/4 or 70-200 f/2.8 L (non-is) for general zoom
> 17-40L

A part of the research is fun..... a lot of it is headache. But I agree, looking up photos on this forum can help a lot (sometimes!)

You could add a 1.4x tele to the 300 to get that longer range of the 400. I haven't regretted purchasing this lens since the day I got it. Of course, I had rented it first, so knew I loved it. Which is something you guys might want to consider before purchasing any lens. Rent one for a few days or a week and give it a really good workout. Lenses are like cameras......... a personal choice/preference. What's right for me, just might or might not be right for you. There's no right or wrong, but it's a very big investment to make and then not be happy.

@Peter Wonderful shots of the heron. Very sharp and not over processed. Looks great!!

A few shots from last Saturday in Mankato -

I was actually just going for a ride with a friend, but we thought we might be able to get to an air show for a bit. As it worked out, the Blue Angels were going to start their dance about 10 minutes after we got there.

I was really glad to have had the 300 with. It was the only lens I used.

And I almost left it at home.

Thanks Anne. I appreciate it.

Stacking a 300 F4L IS + 1.4xII + 20mm tube and shot handheld...turned out quite alright.

Very nice indeed. I have a set of extension tubes, but frankly, I haven't a clue how to use them, so they just stay in the bag.

^^^ hehehe....I know the feeling, Anne. If you gonna try it, the 1.4xII goes first followed by the tube then the lens. Hope all is well with you :)

Well, at least I tried stacking 'em but find that I get good results on the 135 F2L & 24-70 instead. Will try sometime without the 1.4xII perhaps I get some decent shots.

The last hurrah for now...

Peter, did you ever finish the lawn? Doesn't look like it.
