Here is another with the 2x TC, too bad about the tree leaves, but I was only able to get 2 shots before he flew off. :(
Nice capture m8.
For me the leaves improve the shot .... gives it depth and shows the setting ....... Removing the shot from the "just another reference book full frame photo of a bird" catagory, which i find boring.

Great page of images here!
I just posted a question in a new thread. The short story is: How do I extend the hood on this lens? I am assuming I read correctly it has one built-in.
Thanks.

No crop on the picture...This is just the conversion form Raw to straight Jpeg.
I was wondering between 2.8 or 4 and I am very pleased with f4. The AF AI SERVO is not the fastest to track birds but very usable.

Well thanks to this thread, I picked this wonderful lens over the 100-400 zoom. I'm VERY happy with that decision so far.
My wife and I are pregnant and my MIL and one of my wives friends threw her a surprise shower Sunday. I was "in on it" in that I had to get her there and help keep it a secret. I traded that for being allowed to shoot the party. Of course I brought along my new 300mm for some fun/"testing":

now these last 2 are here to show why IS isn't a miracle cure... Everything was shot at f4 and ISO800 to get reasonable shutter speeds (I was seeing anywhere from 1/30th to 1/125th depending on who was sitting where). In these last 2 there is movement AND slow shutter speed resulting in motion blur. In this shot it's fine:
http://www.benjacobsen.com/wp-content/gallery/baby-shower/IMG_4322.jpg
but in this shot the baby is moving fast enough it ruins the shot:
http://www.benjacobsen.com/wp-content/gallery/baby-shower/IMG_4324.jpg
all in all though, I'm VERY impressed with this lens. I didn't get any worse comments with it than I did with the 24-70mm (which is pretty large w/hood). I loved being able to be across the room and get spontaneous shots of people w/o them knowing it. Also the f4 bokeh is incredible. You do have to be careful with your focusing to be sure what you want is in focus as the DOF can be narrow enough to not get the eyes and ears from a profile. But if you get it right, with the IS, even slow shutter shots are amazingly sharp. Just shooting with this lens made my day worthwhile as almost all of the shots I liked were with it. Also when people got in the way of a shot, provided they were just in the frame and not blocking a subject the limited DOF makes them less of a distraction.

LOVE that shot!!! I love warthogs/A10s.... Love it. How were they flying that you were able to get an angle like that? It might have something to do with the location... I'm in RI and they do the show over the bay/ocean here, so it's very flat... Love the shot with something in the background...
http://www.photozo.com/album/data/4638/IMG_7971_edited-1.jpg
Another great shot with a great background. I have one question though, why are you shooting at 1/1600th? They shots are super sharp, as is the background because of it, but with prop planes the prop is pretty well frozen. A slower shutter speed will blur the prop which makes a prop plane look much better.
Nice shots though.

Thanks for the comments.....Both shots were taking in North Wales, part of a the RAF lowfly training area in Snowdonia National Park, the conditions were very poor especially for second shot although you won't have thought so, it had been very dark and had been raining. As for the Turcano, I had just being using AV mode for a Tornado pass to keep the shutter speed high, then he came out of the mist and did switch over to TV to get the prop blur, hence, no prop blur and 1/1600 shutter speed, must abit more alert next time.

well I used a 5D with a 300mm f4 IS. The first 4~5 shots are with a 1.4TC, but then I switched to a 2.0TC because I has unsure of the focus and could see it better with the 2.0 even though it meant I had to manually focus. Those were then resize to match the size from the 1.4 TC shots... Then I shot at whatever exposure was needed for each shot to not be blown out, and I started bracketing once it got dark. The first and last shots are f/11, ISO100 and 1/125th roughly. The dark shots in the middle are ISO800 f/16 and 1second roughly... Then I just brought them all into photoshop and layered them into one document.

I'm in the process of making the very same decision. 300/4 + 1.4 TC or the 100-400/4.5 - 5.6.

My look on it having owned the 300 for a few months now...
I love the 300mm. I hate the design of the 100-400 honestly and I wanted something "fast". The push pull isn't horrible, it's the fact it doubles in length at 400mm and the fact it's f/5.6 at 300 already. Also I bought this when I had my 70-200 so I would only use it from 200-400 and really ~250+ (at 200 I would use the 70-200) so why bother with a zoom with so much range if you're only going to use half of it?
After having the 300, I've proven to myself that I prefer primes. I love the 300mm with it's f/4 and IS. I can handhold down to 1/30th easily and the bokeh and separation are amazing. I'm sure the 100-400 is also good, but it's a bigger/heavier/more expensive lens.
The devil's advocate in me knows the 100-400 would be an amazing lens for travel though. Pair it with a 24-105 and you have some serious range all covered with IS. But it comes down to what you'll be using this for, and how you like to shoot. If you're not sure see if you can borrow a 1.4TC and tape your 70-200 at 200 for a day. See how limiting that is for you. My 70-200 spend a lot of time at either 200 or 280 so I knew the primes were the right choice for me.
You can't go too wrong with either, you really just need to decide whether you're a prime guy or a zoom guy.

Ben,
Thanks for your insight. I'm finding my 70-200 is out at 200 quite a bit too. My initial leaning is to the 300/f4 with the 1.4 TC. And yes, that is one fine l@@king lady above. Your a lucky man. :)

Your duck is actually a hermorphadite hen. I've heard it happens when they get too old to lay eggs. The colors are that of a male, but she still has the hen's orange and black bill. That's a great shot of a unique bird.

fotodan,
Your duck is actually a hermorphadite hen. I've heard it happens when they get too old to lay eggs. The colors are that of a male, but she still has the hen's orange and black bill. That's a great shot of a unique bird.
Thanks Rubberhead. I didn't know that. Interesting...

Heres some at asa 200 f4 aperature priority hand held on my first walk about.
Cosworth influenced my decision to get this lens as he states in another post that he had it, sold it , went 300 2.8 then came back to the f4.
I love this lens. Its small and light (for a 300) and I can stick the tripod mount in my belt loop so it takes the load off the lens mount when on walkies. :D

Couple of things I noticed using a 300mm for sport shooting is that if the actions are coming at you, you really don't have much time to decide how you want to compose. You wait it too long, the subject will go pass your angle of view. The 300mm is great if you just want to focus on the player's expression alone. I guess if you are in a stadium and can't really move to different angles, you may need 300mm. The bike shots were from a NYC local major bike race. I was very close to the action and found myself using the 70-200L all the time. Out of 700 shots, I have less than 10 of them using the 300L.

I purchased the 300 f4L IS about 2 months before I went on an Alaskan cruise in August of 2006. Right from the moment I boarded the ship in Vancouver, the 'air show' started. I have included two photos from Ketchikan.
I am very pleased with the results and glad that I added it to my 'arsenal'.

I contacted Canon support and this is an excerpt from their email.
Thank you for contacting Canon product support. We value you as a Canon
customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you with your EF 300mm
f/4L IS USM lens.
Sometimes Image Stabilization can make a slight noise, but it shouldn't
beep. We recommend that you send your lens to a service center to be
examined. We apologize for the inconvenience that this has been for
you.
I guess I'll send it in just to be checked. It does beep sometimes.
Here is the last image I took before the beeping.

I really like this shot DIJ!! Just ordered mine last night from B & H... they went on backorder for a while. Chose the 300 over the 400 f/5.6 for the closer working distance. Looking forward to it very much. Keep posting!
Bought this lens last week. Here's a shot from my first afternoon outside with it:

A big thanks to everyone who posted to this thread; it really helped seal my decision to purchase the 300!! This seems to be a somewhat forgotten lens in the Canon lineup, but while researching what to buy, this lens stood out for beautiful shots and just about the perfect 4.9 ft minimum distance. Ultimately selected this over the 400 because of that and looks like it will be perfect for shooting the gardens (and creatures) this summer. Looking forward to posting soon...

In lowlight on a monopod with IS you can get some amazing keepers even with the 1.4x. Try that with a 400 5.6. Even on a monopod you will see camera shake in just about 100% of your shots.

This lens was my bread-and-butter field lens this spring. I shot Track&Field and Lacrosse for hours on end with this lens glued to my 1D mk II. EXIF should be attached.

I fell in love with my 5D the first time I used it (and the 24-105mm f/4L). I really like the 100mm f/2.8 macro I bought for the up close & personal stuff. But this 300mm f/4L ? Unbelievable. I have never had a lens that is so sharp and creates the most beautiful backgrounds. I shot a random bunch the other night in the gardens and now I can hardly wait for the birds and butterflies to appear. Great lens for handheld shots - much better than I was hoping for. Why isn't this lens in everyone's inventory? I am blown away and couldn't be happier spending $1200. WoW.
