Could you explain what that gravestone actually is?
It's on an old family farm that was donated to the town of Durham NH as a park, here is what I found about him.
James Davis, son of John & Jane (Peaslee) Davis, was b. 23 May 1662 in Dover, Strafford Co NH and d. 8 Sep 1749 in Oyster River, Strafford Co NH. He m. 1 Oct 1688 in Durham NH to Elizabeth Chesley, dau of Thomas & Elizabeth (Thomas) Chesley. She b. 1669 in Oyster River NH and d. abt 1748 in Oyster River NH. During the French and Indians War: He was a Lieutenant in 1691 in King William's War, a Captain in Queen Anne's War in 1704, and afterwards Colonel; he was a brave and successful officer. He was also, for many years, a prominent and useful member of the General Assembly of New Hampshire.

Thanks DonG.
I got a bit confused because of the new flag standing next to an old gravestone. Your culture is (as far as I can tell) a bit different than over here in The Netherlands. We do not actually honour graves of important people who died a long time ago. A lot of them are buried inside churches. Most people usually look up when visiting a church but onderneath their feet are the people who once were important.
The only exeption is made for soldiers of any nationality who died during WWII. We still honour them! For their courage and also to teach our children.

I just bought this lens also and so far I've been amazed with the images it has produced with my EOS 30D. Here are three samples: the first has been resized from 3504x2336 to 1680x1050...no other processing of any kind. The second is a 100% crop from the first. The final image has been post processed with ACR and CS3.

Just curious to see where those who owned or own this lens purchased as the next lens and for what reason.

I have wanted the 300mm F/2.8 since before I got the 300mm F/4. But every time I go out with the 300mm f/4, I am thrilled with the bokeh and sharpness. I consider it the hidden gem in the Canon lineup. It is easy to under appreciate it but only because most of us don't take the 300mm out with us as much as other lenses. And since the 300mm f/2.8 is much bigger and heavier, I would shoot with that much less than the f/4.

So yes, this lens still over delivers every time out. In fact I took only the 300mm f/4 with me during a short walk through the neighborhood park today... a few samples:

I agree completely with davidinjp. The 300 f/4 IS is superb all-around telephoto lens, which can be pressed into service for a variety of applications - even for some it is not perfect for. I have a 400 f/5.6 for birds-in-flight shots, but the 300 does a stand up job as well - especially with the 5DMII which has a very precise central focus mode and high enough resolution to allow drastic cropping of images. Here's a shot from last week. I went out to shoot some geese in the water, but they were just leaving as I arrived. I only had the 300 with me. P.

Both taken with a 2X converter attached, I love how I've still got AF with this lens when the 2X converter is on. Sorry about the brown cast on the rump of the Squirrel on number 2, there must have been a twig sticking up in the foreground. Great lens although sometimes sounds like the I.S. is steam powered, from what I read here it appears that is normal.

2x, eh? Those photos are sharp! Very nice indeed! Seems this lens is a very capable offering!!

Of course, a good immobile subject, transfixed on munching seeds is always welcome, of course.

Nice shots - as usual David!

IMO this one would be more effective in portrait format instead of landscape format. Nonetheless, very nice photos!

Makes me want to run off to the store and get this lens. Seems it's a great lens for portraiture and would be a perfect addition to my current lineup even though I seldom shoot long (except for the odd bird here or there).

It was quite a dull day, with that set up there would have been little chance of getting anything moving and no chance of getting anything in flight (well maybe if it was hovering :D).

I have the 100-400, the 70-200 f2.8 and the 300 f4 prime. Out of the 3; the 300 f4 prime consistently produces the sharper shots, it's just not as versatile.

I am in the same boat...minus the 100-400.....Love this lens and picked it up for a great great deal. Just waiting for kids to move onto bigger soccer fields. 70-200 works well for that now.

I originally had the 100-400, and although it was a great lens, I just never could get the hang of it. I think having the lens change length so much over the zoom range takes some getting used to. I actually liked the push/pull zoom though. I found someone looking to trade a 300 f4 IS for a 100-400, and couldn't be happier. Plus, add a 1.4tc and you have a 420mm f5.6 with IS. And judging by the 300 sample archive the lens does real well with a tc.

Well,

They "appear" to be well lit because I did my job.

I've found that when the producers want you to see something on stage, they turn the lights on  . I have NEVER been to a production that the 300 f/4 IS couldn't handle.

PS - the general definition of a low light shot is, iso800, wide open and and 1/FL(x crop, if any) for a shutter speed. This shot was taken at iso1600, wide open and 1/250, well below the definition of a low light shot. AND, I'm not in the mood to post more shots to prove my point, so instead I'll ask the question, "Have you even tried the 300 f/4 IS for stage/theater work?".

Well,

They "appear" to be well lit because I did my job.

This shot was taken at iso1600, wide open and 1/250, well below the definition of a low light shot.

Ah! I see, that would explain the noise and the blown out areas then ;) I'm joking mate, don't jump down my throat. I have tried it but I've found it better for me to get closer to the front and use the 70-200 2.8. That said; the rest of the audience don't seem too keen on me sitting on my step ladders at the front to get level with the stage

OK,

So maybe I woke up a bit grumpy ;) . This image was done for a newspaper - no time or need for NR. There are many times getting closer is not an option, so my 70-200 f/2.8 IS becomes a rather shortish lens. Yes the 7-2 is better (except for ultimate IQ) if you can get up close than the 300, but even then the 300 is good for head shots.

Oh, and be careful on that ladder ;) :) .

Okay, so after seeing this thread I finally decided to pickup a 300mm f/4 IS. Got mine from Amazon. Shot some fun stuff this weekend (owls, herons, bald eagles) and am extremely disappointed. My 70-200mm f/4 @ 200mm @ blown up to match the 300mm = much sharper! It's obvious (to me at least) that a I got a bum lens :/ Back to Amazon it goes.

Just to check - have you used similar lenses to this before? I didn't get stellar results at first with my 300L, but then learned how to use it to good effect & I'm now delighted.

If you are a seasoned long-lens user, please ignore the question & I hope you get satisfaction on the return!!

Long time lurker, first time contributor... The order arrived yesterday morning in time for me to go to my local wildlife preserve to have lunch with this babe--my first shots through the new glass below! :D

The landscape is the only edited image at a full width crop from portrait with one click both of sharpening and light. Otherwise, all were shot hand-held on a 50D in Faithful at ISO 100; stopped to either f/5.6 or f/7.1; with SS between 1/500-1/800, then resized to the 1024 limit. This is going to be great glass for the $$$.

Have been debating between this wonderful glass and the 100-400L. Even though the 100-400 would give me greater versatility, the image quality of this lens and the lesser bulk points me in this direction. And knowing I can add a TC to give me greater reach is good.

dlintz, I don't think it's a disappointing lens, at all. Though, the 300 f/2.8 IS, now, that would be something. ;) Nonetheless, it's a sharp lens, IS is great cause I have the shakes, and for me to get to 1/250th with IS is a blessing. :) I've never tried it with a 2x tcon, but, the 1.4tc isn't 'all' that degrading...though, I think with the 2x you may lose AF...not sure. Might depend on the cam. ;)

As others have said of the 1Ds II, it feels like the "end all" for DSLRs. It's definitely way more camera than I need as a hobbyist but I love the absolute security you get from it's focusing.

I'm just hoping the 2 stops of light loss from a 2x tele won't turn me off as the 500 and 600 are fairly pricey...plus they would be superfluous for my needs/wants. I really do love my 300 f/4 but the f/2.8 would certainly be nice too.

The IS is the same for all 300 f/4 IS lenses. It was designed way back in the day, and that design has remained the same over the years. It will take a mkII version of the lens to be released before you don't get "'97 IS."

I find I can get consistent sharp shots at 1/125 or higher (slightly more than 1-stop correction), but anything below that is a crap shoot. With my 70-200 I can shoot at 1/40 (~2.5 stops) at 200mm and be consistently sharp.

I had the 70-200/2.8 and 200/2.8 on a 1.6x body and had no problems hand holding that so I dont think the 300/4 on a 1.3x body will be much more difficult especially since the 1D bodies are so well balanced to begin with. I'll try it and if after two weeks I feel it's too long without IS, back it will go.

The IS is the same for all 300 f/4 IS lenses. It was designed way back in the day, and that design has remained the same over the years. It will take a mkII version of the lens to be released before you don't get "'97 IS."...

I didn't know that. I thought it was updated, I guess I confused it with the 70-200 f4 IS lens.
