You know it "screws" into place right?
Meaning, you need to twist it to lock it in.

So, I said I'd post when I got the lens.

I've only had a few days to try it out.

All I can say is, "wow". Way beyond the capabilities of my camera's sensor (using the old digirebel 6.3Mp).

For those who are considering it, do it. You won't regret it. I got mine "used" for under $1000.00. Best money I've spent in a looong time.

No PS besides cropping on these:

Even most of my BIF shots worked. And this camera is no great performer on the autofocus front (AI Servo, Pfft, that's for pros:rolleyes:)

Morning folks,

A month or so ago I bought a second-hand 300mm L f4. About to throw away the box it came in and I noticed a small envelope ... it contained a Hoya 77mm UV filter. Looks to be in perfect condition.... is there any reason why I wouldn't put this on the lens permanently as a protection. Any detrimental effect on image quality?

Thanks

Brian

I was always of the opinion that if I've paid all that money for L glass; why would I want to stick a cheap piece of glass in front of it. When I sit down and think about it though; it doesn't really have to be that good glass in front does it? after all; it's not trying to focus anything; it's not trying to correct anything (except UV rays in this case) and it's not trying to bend light down to the size of your sensor, all it has to do is let light through relatively unaffected. So it's up to you. Perhaps you should ask this question on the Equipment Section though.

There's so many threads on filters, it's not even funny. There's nothing wrong with putting the filter on the lens...some just prefer the lens naked, others don't. I keep one on, when the lens is stored, and once it comes out of the bag, the filter comes off. I put it back on, once I'm done. ;)

Matt, nice shots...how ya likin' the lens? Looks like it's working out well, for ya! :)

I really am. Theres something about the files coming out of the 1D that just aren't that appealing to me. I have heard, though, that the difference between the files of the 1D2 and 1D3 is pretty astounding.

inthedeck
3rd of August 2009 (Mon), 08:41
Never used a 1D series, but, from what I've seen...if I were to find a 1Ds2 in my budget sometime in the near future, I'd acquire it. :)

Cl!ckFoto

prolly another 5D although im really considering a switch to Noink. The D700 is really appealing right now. Expensive though.

inthedeck
3rd of August 2009 (Mon), 09:09
Lenses are too many $$'s, that is what keeps me with the Canon camp. Plus, not really sure I want to make that switch, in my mind, when going from one system to the other. Controls, ergonomics, lens rotation direction for AF, etc. ;) But, at least you have the choice...so maybe try out one of their bodies...and see if it makes sense, does what you want it to, etc. ;)

Cl!ckFoto
3rd of August 2009 (Mon), 09:35
I had a D70s before and wasn't terribly disappointed with it. Really the only thing driving me to that direction is the FF/8fps. Other than that, no reason for me to switch. especially considering the lens prices.

I've never been able to get into a Football game with a 50mm lens, let alone a 300mm bazooka. ;) I'd gather the F/4 will maybe inhibit you a bit, unless you have a camera that can do high iso pretty well. Of course, I could be completely wrong here...and I suppose the light is the real factor.

It is one really nice lens, though, I can say that, for sure. ;)

I just came back from a local store and was about to plunge into the 300 f/4 IS, but there was a few specks of dust inside it. Since it was the last copy, the salesman proposed that he will get a new copy from another store tomorrow. Gosh, I tested it on my 5D with and without the 1.4x teleconverter. It is really amazing, sharpness wise. Can't wait for tomorrow to arrive - but please keep the photos coming in the meanwhile!

Thanks. Unfortunately, that particular one was way too long...so I couldn't. I will see if I have a full body shot, but, using the 300 at about 7-10 feet away, even on a FF cam., I couldn't get the whole thing in frame. Literally, the iguana was about 4-5 feet, with his tail. After this shot, he basically jumped into the water...and that was way too quick for me to grab a shot.

How does the weight of this lens affects carrying? Can you hang it by the usual camera straps facing downwards or its stressfull for the mount?

^^Shouldn't be an issue. Those mounts are darn strong. ;)

It's lighter than the 70-200 2.8 too. Just make sure your strap is secure and in good condition.

Just an FYI...check out the R strap; it allows you to hang the lens over your shoulders and to the side of your hip...similar to a gun in a holster. No pain in the neck cause it can get old after awhile carrying that 300 around the neck

Check it out: http://www.blackrapid.com/product/camera-strap/rs-4/

Just a quick question. Am I correct in thinking...

7D+1.4TC+300f4 = 1.6*1.4*300f4=672mm f5.6
7D+100-400f5.6=1.6*400f5.6=640mm f5.6

Therefore the 300 has 32mm more reach than the 100-400 and can still AF @ 5.6 with the 1.4TC?

Yes, but since you don't have a full frame camera, don't even bother adding in the 1.6 conversions into your calculations. 300mm on a crop is still 300mm on a crop. With the 1.4 it is 420. Unless you have a full frame to compare it to, it is rather pointless thinking of it as a 480mm.

Methodical
7th of January 2010 (Thu), 08:35
32mm is small and you most likely won't see the difference. The main consideration should be zoom vs prime and one stop of light vs focal length needed^^^^^^^ I prefer prime lens with as much reach as possible plus the 1.4 and soon 2x.
