What's the first thing I do with my new EF 300 f4L IS?

Yeah, of course, I use it to shoot at subjects 1.5 meters away.

Canon actually calls the close focus ditance on this lens "macro" in the manual. And the phrase "MACRO 1.5m/4.9ft" is printed on the lens tube next to the distance window. The actual maximum magnification is 1:4.2. While I guess this isn't strictly macro one of the lens' big selling points is certainly its close focusing distance.

This is also my first IS lens. It seems to do its job. But do all IS mechanisms sound so clunky?

Thank you all so much for your kind words. I can already tell this is going to be a really fun lens. This afternoon I get to try it out at the kids' swim practice.

Here are two 100% crops from the third shot. All of these shots were shot JPEG large/fine. I'll be making the switch to RAW sometime in the near future.

I like "macro" photography with my 300 f4 as well, even given its less than life-size magnification--the close focusing distance + long telephoto can really serve to isolate flower blooms, etc. in the picture. I haven't tried it with an extension tube or two, but I do wonder what the results would be...

As for the IS sounds... well, the IS on the 300 f4 is supposedly "louder" than others and definitely makes a quiet but still solid "clunk" when it disengages.

Thanks, that's what my IS sounds like. I guess that's normal.

I also just picked up a set of Kenko extension tubes. I'll try to get a chance to fiddle around with those and the 300 in the next day or two.

Yes, the 1/125 isn't that bad. I may use 1/125 as my lower limit with IS on this lens for now. The 1/100 shot is noticably less sharp as far as I can see. And the 1/320 shot seems to be the sharpest of the last three. 1/focal length lives, even with an IS lens I guess.

This is also my first IS lens. It seems to do its job. But do all IS mechanisms sound so clunky?

As this is on my wish list, I have researched it extensivley. "Clunking" by the IS on this lens is just what it does. Something that you will have to get used to. I

If you don't like it I suppose I will trade you my 50mm f/1.8 for it. :)

Dave, I'd be curious to know how the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 compares to the EF 300 f/4 in terms of IQ, bokeh, etc.

I'm shooting mainly baseball and because our nice weather
is coinciding with when our local teams are on the road, I've only
used it a handful of times. I would say the 120-300 is great in
terms of it's low light capability and perhaps the IQ and bokeh
pop a little bit more. I am looking forward to trying it with the 1.4
TC which I'll be using for the first time tonight... the size is a
little bit of an issue for me, not so much weight wise but rather
the fact that it's not as easy to manuever around the park.

Dave, thanks for your reply. The Sigma EX 120-300 f/2.8 still tempts me; though I have yet to add a single zoom to my collection. It could be the first. My other thought is to get a second body and use an 85 or 100 with the 300.

I have been collecting shots of various cranes working in the area.

This is one of the first that I've taken with the 300/4 and the 1.4x combined on my 5D. It seems that the 300/4 takes the 1.4x rather well. Shot was taken handheld. There was a bit of red fringe that I corrected in RAW Converter.

Interestingly this lens is often used for flower shots, good focus isolation without having to tread on other flowers near by.

Yes, my one's IS is clunky too, don't worry this is normal, the only other IS lens I have is the 24-105 and that is very quiet.

Next steps: Get some tubes, great combination for damsel and dragonflies.
Get the EF 1.4X II and EF 2X II, works very well with both. You do loose AF on a non 1 series body with the 2X but mine still gives sharp results.

well, if you don't have a head on your monopod, you will screw the monopod into the tripod foot. if you do have a head on the monopod or the tripod, does it have a quick release platform? you know what, can you please post pics of your tripod and monopod? this should help us understand what we are dealing with here.

I am thinking of getting this lens for outdoor shots. IE Deer in a field, Would this lens be good for a shot lets say 100 yards away at sun set and for sports things like boat raceing. This link is making me want this lens, even though i'll need to save some more money. (i am at $800.00 now) It is up between 200mm f2.8 II usm, 300mm f4.0 IS usm and the 400mm f5.6 usm. I am headed towards the 300 f4.0 IS. Am i headed the in right direction? By the over all pictures here, close up of flowers, great shot of jet and crashing boat, i think this lens is for me. Oh ya I use a Rebel XT. Any help would be great. Also if you tell me to save even more ($1300.00) to get a better lens I will try. But the kit lens is killing me.

EDIT: i just took the time to look at all of the posted pictures and i saw the picture of the ship and fisherman, so the answer to the 100 yard question is surley YES.

Let's see, Kit lens or 300 f4.0L IS?

I guess if you foot-zoomed about 80 of those 100 yards.

Hmmmm, 100 yards. So that's like standing at the goal line and getting shots of a goal at the other end. Yeah; that would be a decent FOV for a deer, and quality would be there.

This (http://FLASHME.smugmug.com/photos/101036811-L.jpg) is about 25 yards off.
Here, (http://FLASHME.smugmug.com/photos/72780207-L.jpg) the goal post net is about 60 yards off.
So 100 yards would be OK, but not exactly like slapping a 2.0TC on it and going manual focus (because at f8 it won't AF). Or even a 1.4TC for f5.6.

Also; the AF is slow (but consistant) and that can impact it's usefulness some.

I have the opportunity to purchase this lens second hand (but in near mint condition) from someone I work with for about $600.00 with a 1.2x and 2x converter. Sounds like a good deal to me. What do you all think?

From all the photos I've seen on this thread and other forums, this lens is really nice. He had previously used it for bird photography. While I'm not into birding, it's something I've thought about pursuing. Maybe even some photos of my niece playing softball.

What are you waiting for!?!?!?!? $600!!! Even if you don't want the lens you could turn it around for a handsome profit. Go get the money out of the bank and give it to him tonight.

Actually he just told me he wants $800 not $600, that's still a good deal. Hmm.

Actually he just told me he wants $800 not $600, that's still a good deal. Hmm.For $600 I'd be a little afraid of receiving stolen goods. Or that it's not the IS version or has mold inside.

I paid $1000 used about 6 months ago - waited for a week but no better deals at the time. I've seen it as low as $850 since then. $800 is a screaming deal as long as it's in good working order and wasn't manhandled by The Hulk or anything.

He's bringing it in next week and I'll have a chance to use it for a few days if I wish. I'll have a better idea by then its condition and whether it'll suit my needs. If it doesn't, I'll instead save up the money toward the 70-200 f/4 IS, which I'm thinking is more logical for my shooting needs.

I purchased the 300 f4L IS about 2 months before I went on an Alaskan cruise in August of 2006. Right from the moment I boarded the ship in Vancouver, the 'air show' started. I have included two photos from Ketchikan.

I am very pleased with the results and glad that I added it to my 'arsenal'.

I just spent some time looking at all the beautiful images here. I do wish that there weren't so many broken links. Although there is some loss it would be great is more people attached images rather than linked to them.

Anyway, I have been thinking about what I'm going to do to get beyond the 70-200 I have now and for now I'm going to get a Kenko 1.4x TC but I've been reading amazing things about this lens and the images really show it off nicely. I think I'm sold on it. It will be some time before I actually do anything about it but this lens is a killer and I think it's next in line for me.

picked mine up today, not as big as i had thought, but i do love the IS and how it shifts a little when on and how much it helps stabilisation WOW!! very impressive.

however i just read in the manual that with a 2xTC AF is lost on anything other than a 1D series body, i was positive people said it wasnt :( can anyone with say a 20/30D confirm this? i may just have to get used to Manual but am thinking that will be a major issue with motorsport stuff.

fWord
30th of May 2007 (Wed), 07:02
however i just read in the manual that with a 2xTC AF is lost on anything other than a 1D series body...

Yes, this is true. That is because the lens would have a maximum effective aperture of f/8 with the 2X TC attached. Bodies like the 20D and 30D will only AF with a lens that has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger.

There are supposedly some teleconverters available that will allow AF with the taping of some of its contact pins, but therein lies the risk of getting tape stuck all over your mirror box if it comes off the TC.

Even if it works, AF will probably be slow and liable to hunt, not to mention the loss of IQ because of the TC. I've used the 300mm with a 1.4X TC with great results, but even then it appears that there is already some reduction in contrast.

Borderfox

Here are a couple nice examples from last week.

To shoot birds with this lens, I found it is best to shoot in P mode, IS OFF and AF Servo. With the IS on, I found that the IS costs a precious focus moment and ends up ruining the pictures more then not.

No try it, it is hard but you can get excellent results. I have two shots in the POTN book with the 300/4 IS and the EF 2X both manual focus on a 20D and handheld (for my sins).

link me lester.

you using a monopod?

No, both handheld  , the first because it was a 10 second grab opportunity, support would have been good as the light levels were not good but the opportunity would have been gone. 20D EF 300/f IS + EF 2X II 1/320 f8 (Wide open) ISO 3200 + Handcrafted NR, not as sharp as it could be but at least I got the shot.

http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/GalleryPics/Photos/Birds/General/Tits%20and%20Allies/Wildlife%20Birds%20Bluetit%20005%20201006.jpg

The second, I was not expecting to have to use 600mm but the subject was much more skittish than the average dragon; I normally use a 200 or 300mm lens and tubes for these. Like a chump I forgot to take my monopod although at least the light levels were better. 20D EF 300/f IS + EF 2X II 1/1000 f8 (Wide Open again) ISO 800. Sharpness is much more respectable on this one due to a less desperate shutter speed. :)

http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk/photography/GalleryPics/Photos/Arthropods/Dragonflies/Insects%20Dragonfly%20109.jpg

So I don't recommend handholding but you can do the job. On that second one I was shooting for quite a while and the rig was getting heavy. I have an old back injury and was in quite a bad way towards the end, god I wish I had remembered the monopod.

I love this lens:

Thats a remarkable shot given that most people say not to use a 2x on this lens! ISO3200 on the 1D III looks promising too.....

Everytime I consider selling this lens, I look at this thread and buy it back from myself. Amazing how good this lens is. :)

The IS on this lens is a little "clunky", but it gets the job done:

Here is another with the 2x TC, too bad about the tree leaves, but I was only able to get 2 shots before he flew off. :(
