Well saw a male out flying today for a while and and he was displaying and strutting his stuff in-air for a female that was calling.

Ah, the in-flight shot of the Wedge-tailed you promised us. Worth waiting for, Wayne. Spectacular bird, and it looks beautiful against that blue sky. Looks very healthy. No missing wing or tail feathers. And of course, why would you not post a terrific macro shot as well. One can almost smell the eagle breath. ;-)
Anothe fine job.

Very nice over the head shot of an eagle that probably shows up on airport radar :D Nice exposure and BG ....what can I say about the second shot..?...you are endangering that 30D again but for a shot this clear I guess its worth it:D

WOW, GREAT
so if i can't get a shot like that with my 30D and lenses then i have to break all my gears .............. (KIDDING).
just one question: how did you get that close up shot? what is the distance between you and that monster? and which lens did you use for that close up?
sorry, consider these as one question.

The in-flight was with the Bigma and the portrait was with the Tamron SP90 Di macro, It's a lovelt sharp little lens which I tend to use quite alot sadly not for insects or flowers though which was why I got it in the first place lol. How close was I ?, closer than you would want to be hehehe. These birds can produce almost upto 2 tons of of bone crunching PSI in those narly big talons. I think I've posted images of how close I get to some of these birds before. Some it's within feet, others it's within inches or less.
As for making it an avatar Richard, not a bad idea, and I think I will.

If you want to see how close I am sometimes have a look at this old posting lol. I must stress don't upset/stress or endanger a raptor (or any bird/wildlife) just for a image. Know your subjects and their behaviors, actions and reactions. Raptors can be quite dangerous (as can most predators) indeed at close quarters, so if you don't know what your doing and/or it's not under controlled circumstances I wouldn't advise such close advances.
Using a macro or shot focal reach lens can provide a great deal of different challenges which can be quite fun. I work with wildlife sanctuarys and wildlife rehab/rescue groups and spend quite a bit of time with and around raptors as well as a great deal of wild subjects. Please be careful of whatever you do and always keep the animals welfare in mind and respect it.
