This guy looked like he was trying to imitate a loon.

Or a cormorant. ;-) OK, loon is better. Good catch, Dan. It's difficult to get oneself to look closely at a bird as common as a mallard. On the other hand, this one definitely stands out from the crowd.

nice shot, the composition is good.
The colors look nearly black & white, painting like, I like it. Is this the way you took it or ps?
