View Full Version : Lens problem?

I've got a D60 - just purchased a Canon 20-35. Noticed
artifacts in pictures of sky. Cleaned lens & filter - same
problem. Took off filter - same problem. Changed to
my 50 mm - no problem. Must be the lens, right.

Sent lens back to B & H, they replaced it (different serial
number). Same problem.

I haven't posted photos to this forum before so hopefully
this will work - in trying to make them small (under 200K)
I may have lost essential detail to figure out what's
going on.

Any hints, suggestions, avenues of exploration would
be appreciated,

Thanks.

Dark or light artifacts?

Light artifacts might, in fact, be lens flare.

Dirt on the CMOS sensor?

I ralize that you used a different lens and the artifacts weren't there,. BUT sometimes I get the dust showing up in pics,. sometimes I don't.

Try a long exposure of the sky with the 50mm lens. See If the artifacts show up then,. if it does,. you have dust on the CMOS sensor.

This is probably a dirty sensor. I just recieved my pec-pads and solution today...Wish me luck, my sensor is FILTHY!

I have similar pictures. There are many posts on here about cleaning the sensor.

Best of luck,

A close inspection of the two pictures reveals that ALL THE SAME spots are there. It's just got to be the sensor. I'd suggest taking a shot of the bright blue sky (focus set to anything) with two different lenses. Perhaps your sensor has "tough dust" or "stuck on dust".

Hiya,
When I had dust on my sensor it only showed up when stopped at about f/13 maybe f/11 but I definatly needed dof.

Definitely dust.

Personally I very rarely shoot at anything smaller than F8. However, I feel it is physically impossible to remove enough dust to shoot at F22. I have cleaned the sensor and had maybe one clean shot - after that I get a different dust pattern. So, that action of the shutter causes locked in dust to be attracted to the sensor.

Maybe Canon should consider some kind of electro-static trap for dust.

It doesn't bode well for when Canon release a 14-16MP full frame sensor.
