I recently used this lens on a shoot, I would like to know if these issues are common.

Im using the lens on a 10D, manual mode for SS/and Apeture.

first issue, is No Beep when it locks focus, its locking focus, but no audible sound.
second issue, Im uisng the lens in a Manual shutter speed and apeture mode, 125 at f9 and I ntoice what sometimes seems to be a shutter/mirro delay. The image is properly exposed, but the shutter speed sounds like it dropped to about a 15th of a second and there seems to be a delay in the the mirror up/dn in the view finder. All the images are fine, it does not do it all the time, and Im shooting very rapidly. Not enough to fill up the buffer, but maybe 5-8 quick images before stopping.

Any ideas?

None of my lenses beep. So I am really curious about why your 10D would beep at all.

No matter what the shutter speed, it does seem that it takes a noticeable amount of time for the view to come back from hitting the shutter and the mirror getting out of the way, but I have never timed it. So on the second issue, I think this may be normal. But if it only happens with that lens, then may be a lens issue.

The NO beep is because I was in AI servo focus mode, changed it back to one shot and its beeping again :)

Brian (and other 75-300 IS owners/users),

Could you please share some of your experience using this lens? How's the image quality compared to other non-L alternatives?

I'm debating between this and the 17-40L for my next lens. The 17-40L would be closer to what I usually need but I'd like to start learning tele-photography too. It's also cheaper so it's easier to justify (to the missus, that is :)).

Thanks,
Aylwin

I can't help with any other alternative, but for my use I love the lens :)

Brian,
I've also had this seeming long shutter with this lens, but it seems to take the photo correctly. I've just learned to accept that it's a "digital" thing.
I use this lens all the time, for sports and portraits and butterflies. It took some time to get used to the IS, although I don't use it all the time, it is useful when hand holding for close-ups and sports.

Some of the best pictures I have taken have been with the 75-300 IS. I will admit that my 70-200 IS is better, but I am not parting with my 75-300 IS as it is a wonderful lens. It allows me to travel light and still feel I am getting outstanding quality.

Just my opinion,

Yes I have the Canon 75-300 IS as well and experience the same shutter delay phenomenon. The picture turns out fine but the mirror seems to stay locked up for just a split second to long. This seems to only happen in Al Servo mode. All I can say is hmmmmm. I as well have learned to lived with it.

I think I will try it out on my Elan 7 to see if I experience the same thing.

I do like the lens very much. The IS comes in very handy indeed. I have heard this is not the the sharpest lens and am quite satisfied but do see an impact especially at it's full 300m. Although I have not tried out the 100-400L but I am certain it is much sharper.

If you are interested here is a sample pic I have previously posted taken with the 75-300IS at I beleive 1/250 shutter speed at full 300mm. Not bad but keep in mind it has done better for me. Let me know if you want more samples.

Good luck!

Brian, please do post what you find. If you can include some pics that would be even better.

Clos, I think that's a great picture! I'd love to see what you consider even better. Is that taken with a 10D? Also, do you have any pictures taken with a slower shutter speed? I'm wondering how slow one can go handheld (or with monopod) at 300 with IS enabled.

Can anyone else share a few sample pics with this lens?

Anyway, that's it. I'm getting the 75-300 IS. The 17-40L will have to wait. :)

Yep thats the deal :) Take it back to "one shot" mode and all is well, beep and no shutter wierdness.
