View Full Version : POTN WORLDWIDE PHOTO DAY Part 8 APRIL 29-30 TRAVEL- SOMETHING NEW

I'm a little late sorry to the folks who's Saturday is already half done.. so, this weeks new theme is travel, and something new it's been described quite a bit in last weeks thread.. So, the point of this is to take photos that you've never tried before, or go to a new place, there's no wrong answers here..it's up to interpretation..Rules schmules.. Photos have to be taken from sun-up on your Saturday until Sun-down on your Sunday and posted by Monday..two is the forum limits so we try to stay within Pekka's rules, but if you have three and can't choose one, I promise not to bust you for it.....
as for compositions the sky is the limit... I do believe that Tommy is going to Praque and Meaty is going to go take pictures of hookers (don has very nicely been invited along, too bad he's on the East Coast and Meaty's in Australia:D :D )... As for me, I have no idea... but then again I never do.. Looking forward to seeing our shots.. Especially figuring out what the heck i'm going to pull out of my hat....
Hey dave, what did you decide?? Just curious...

Hey dave, what did you decide?? Just curious...
Well, I dunno as yet. I am probably going somewhere I wouldn't normally go but not decided where. I have three options I thought of, one means walking and two mean driving. It might depend on the weather; it might depend on whether I decide use my new tripod; it might depend on whether I watch football or not; it might depend on my mood; it could be a new genre for me; or it might just depend on whether I decide to try a lens I very rarely use but do enjoy. It could also depend on whether I do all of those things together or just one ... or two!
But I will be taking the broad 'something/somewhere new in my photography' road rather than simply travelling somewhere but doing the same thing. Of course, there is always the chance some as yet unknown neighbour knocks on my door and requests that I take some glamour shots of her

Well, Saturday is coming to a close here.
Today we took a drive (transport?) to a beach south of Sydney Airport where a heap of guys were kite surfing. As soon as they saw the camera, some of them came closer in for me - and I managed to try to take pictures while panning (new to me) and with the focus button shifted to the * button on the back (never tried that before - 2 x something new - the surfers and the focus).
After we left the beach, I remembered that 2 of the Antarctic aircraft had been parked at the airport (more transportation) so we went to have a look. One was still there.

Nice kitesurfing pic Kiwi...you handled the 2x new pretty well!
I'm working on my idea...not having much luck in the brain department so far however. This post is mostly so I could easily subscribe to the thread and comment for no worthwhile reason at the same time. :D

I here you Don. Maybe its because it is too darn early in the AM to be thinking.:D I got up early for a yard sale, in fact an hour early. The sale doesn't start until 7 and I got up thinking it was at 6.:(

Thanks for the comments - the airplane is a kinda throwaway shot - transport...
I have over 100 'action' shots from the kite surfing - with them airborne, sinking, spraying water, looking aghast at their rigs...
I may post another kite shot of a real entertaining guy - he is nearly 60 years old and does it to keep fit (they were all so chatty) and I have shots of him totally airborne! It makes ya think - some people really lead active lives.

Well I'm travelling on business in Japan and haven't photographed cherry blossoms before nor seen kids having fun trying to collect them. As for the dog, well that was something that was completely new for me to photograph whilst travelling.

I did a couple of new things today. Went to a place I had never been, to photograph a friends nephew in a baseball game. Met some new people and photographing a baseball game itself. When I came home I decided to try a new PP method I was reading about last night. Here are my results.

I really like this one, except I wish I hadn't cut off his feet.

Ok I assumed travel could venture into the realm of transportation in general as well. I wanted to get something even more dynamic, the coordination of which would have delayed the actual shooting until sunset when the lighting is more dramatic but all the troopers were out on calls. I had to settle for these boring snaps instead.

Well Done Don ... I thought you'd bottled it there but you hit a home run (as you fella's say!) That's put me under pressure to deliver. I've already done 'something new' using tripod, flash, rare Zeiss lens and 'still life' style, none of which I usually use and definately never together, but I am intending going 'somewhere new' as well ... so I will wait to see what I get there. Some interesting interpretations this week.

Thanks Dave. Wasn't anywhere near what I had in mind though, save for the police theme. The trooper on duty at the barracks gave me the number for the trooper in charge of PR and said he'd probably be willing to coordinate a "shoot" if I wanted so I'll see about doing something when I return from my Disney trip. I'll try to get what I really wanted and post it then even though it'd be too late to apply to the challenge. The police are quite friendly and accomodating when they aren't arresting you.
I can't wait to see what you post. I won't see it until I get back (no laptop) but I'll definitely check it out - unless of course you get something within the next 12 hours or so.

Thanks John. You can imagine that I filled my 2 x 1 gig cards walking around Kyoto yesterday. Loved the Kite Surfer pic - guess that was with the 70-200 and 1.4x usage? Looks like it was a nice clear day as well. Yesterday in Kyoto was overcast and today as I fly out sitting at the airport the sky is of course a beautiful deep blue.

yup on the 70-200 and 1.4x. I met up with Dave (Choderboy) during the week and he gave me some really good tips for the kite surfers - they were taken down at water level from the spot where you, Matt and I stood that day. I filled the 2Gb card yesterday :)
That weather is always fickle. I'll look forward to some 35,000 feet pics!

Okay, my wife banned me from going down to Brisabane's Red Light district to photograph the...ahem..."Working Girls" last night. I had to settle for taking a trip to Lone Pine Sanctuary. This is an animal sanctuary in Brisbane, which despite having lived here 49 years, I have never been to. So, something new! Was a pretty good outing until it rained too:D

Love the train shot Blackviolet ... wonderful, but I hope you didn't try and catch that one   Good standard this week :D
Ok, mine is a funny one because I decided to take the theme of 'travel/somewhere new' as a metaphor and incorporate several different 'journeys'. I'm on a long weekend off so nice to have time to chill and play for a change!!
First I wanted to experiment with my new tripod, also with flash (which I very rarely use), with a couple of my ultra cheap classic lenses that rarely get a run out, with a totally different type of shooting that I never do (almost still life!!) with a new approach to sharpening and finally ... with a new way of cooking Risotto
I had a great time and learnt quite a bit. First, how once you crack manual exposure then with camera on a tripod almost every shot can be a keeper (tho' a tad trickier with MF lenses, esp. in a steamy kitchen!) Second, it's a mistake to add a pinch of dried herbs to a perfect Risotto just to get a visual effect. Third, how bl**dy hard it is to shoot still life type stuff!! There is so much detail there, shadow and light, and so many chances to screw up. It's a bit like Macro
Anyway, first shot is with my amazing £6.00 Helios 58mm f2.0 and second two with my £50 Pentax SMC 50mm 1.4 and always using manual everything.
http://www.buzzdns.com/ingredients1.jpg
Here are the basic ingredients. Rice, stock, olive oil and butter are less photogenic so I passed on shooting them.
http://www.buzzdns.com/pan.jpg
Here we have everything simmering away nicely.
http://www.buzzdns.com/plate1.jpg
Finally we have the finished meal which was very nice indeed - 8/10 ;) I often eat out so actually cooking properly with ingredients was also something rediscovered. A good Risotto should be moist but with a tiny crunch still left in the rice. This is almost perfect apart from the slivers of cheese melted too quick on top. I am pretty good at cooking but usually too lazy these days.

very impressive Dave.. risotto is great, and yours looks wonderful.. as for me cooking   .. I can ruin mac and cheese, and have been known, allthough it was a long time ago to fail at popcorn... but, I can bake. So I guess i'm not a total girl/kitchen failure... LOL..

I had totally forgotten about this photo assignment! Oops.
Nice shots everyone. I was going to shoot a parade in gothenburg that the engineering students have every year. It was raining though, so didn't happen.
At least now I know the theme for this week and will see if I can come up with something tomorrow!

Well, the something new for me was to try taking shots with my 70-200 stacked with a 1.4 and a 2x TC... which also required manual focus... another new thing for me 'cause my eyes aren't all that great. Both shots are at 33% and the best of the lot. Think I'll stick with just the 1.4 in the future. :)

I did several new things this weekend. The first was driving down to Princeton, New Jersey and then going to a recital performed completely in German (Italienisches Liederbuch composed by Hugo Wolf.) I had never taken photos of a live performance and so I had to try a few new things (tripod, remote shutter release, high ISO, etc). I got a lot of unusable shots, but I thought this one came out pretty good.

Today I was asked by professional bassoonist, conductor and music tutor Laurence Perkins to take this group shot for his wind day in Dunkeld. A new departure for me.
http://static.flickr.com/46/137780486_e45c7c155c_o.jpg
Afterwards some of us went for a drink at the Taybank, Dunkeld's live music bar by the Tay. To keep to the 'new' theme I used my new lens - the EF 28 f1.8. We started in the garden:
http://static.flickr.com/47/137780484_a8595ffe2f_o.jpg
When the sun went down we went inside and Laurence and Andy started playing whistles, pipes, clarinet and bassoon! This guitarist joined in:

The 28 f1.8 proved its worth as the light was quite low.

Something new for me was going to a convention (?) for greyhounds (dogs, not buses) that were retired from racing and then adopted by regular families. I learned some interesting things about greyhounds. For instance, apparantly they're bred strictly for speed, so they have a wide variety of colors and markings. Their personalities are laid back and easy-going, so they don't jump up on you, bark incessantly, dig holes all over the yard or do lots of the other things that can make dogs somewhat difficult to live with. I heard one owner describe her greyhounds as couch potatoes. I can attest to their civility -- I saw at least 100 of them over several hours and never saw a single one misbehave. Amazing, really. So here's shot #1:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-8/812687/BigWhite.jpg
Among all those gangly greyhounds I came across another "something new." It was a small dog called a Something Crested -- I think it was an Asian Crested, but can't quite remember. This poor thing has no hair to speak of except on his head, feet & tail. I talked with his owner and learned that he's a pretty high-maintenance critter. Because of his lack of hair, he needs to wear a coat in the winter and sunscreen in the summer. He had been outside the day before and had got a bit sunburned, which explains his pink areas in the picture below. He also needs a bath about every 10 days. Otherwise, his skin turns pimply and also develops blackheads. So here he is in all his glory!

Thanks BG and everyone else. Good pick-up there BG. Yes he is a young'un. They divide the koalas into three different enclosures; The Nursery for the kids, The Working Class enclosures where the working stiffs are, that have to do "cuddling" duties with the Japanese tourists, and The Old Folks Home:D where the cranky old fart koalas are kept. I unfortunately, identify with the later.

Okay y'all I will admit this pretty much had me stumped.. and then I remembered that I really haven't worked with my newest lens so, this morning I took it down to the train yard that's about two miles from my house.. I can hear the trains out my bedroom window every two hours or so all through the night.. and since these trains are going places I figured it would fit... here's another first, forgot to change my ISO so i'm fairly certain this was taken at 1600  ..
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b130/saravrose/the%20challenge/CopyofIMG_3313.jpg
and then just as I was about to leave my house my little nieces showed up and again decided to put the new glass through some paces and tested it out on them... this is Kenzer about three minutes after she fell into the flower bed in the front yard.. as you can see I was bribing them with hershey's kisses;) ;) ...what can I say? she's not much of a poser and I figured it would be an easy way to get her to sit still... anyway, it was a good day and I got a few nice shots of the girls.. conclusion. Liking this lens the kit is going in the bottom of that drawer that I have.. the one with the boxes from the stuff i've bought and all those prints that haven't seen the light of day hope you enjoy them...

As Sari mentioned I was in Prague this weekend for the frist time. Probably not the last. It was fun despite flight being delayed, transfered to a new hotel and pouring rain on the arrival night friday. And of course the good weather came today when is was time go home. Now to the photos.

Finally got to get my pics ready at lunch again today. This weekend we celebrated my daughter's first birthday. Since I have taken many shots of her and I have actually shot another 1 year old's party I didn't think I could use these but then "something new" came up. We have been eagerly anticipating this event for the obligatory first cake shots, but our daughter surprised us. SHE DOESN'T LIKE CAKE! OR ICE CREAM for that matter. Several members of the family tried to convince her to eat it by showing her but to no avail. So here she is in all her glory. I have never taken a photo of a child who didn't like cake.

Some family members brought a football (American football :D ) to the party and I thought I would get a few sports shots in. I have wanted to try out some sports type shots for some time now and this seemed to be about as good as any. So here is my wife's cousin giving the ball the ol' heave.

I don't think she will always dislike these two sweets forever. She is a very good eater normally and eats just about everything we put in front of her. The cake had just too much food coloring which tastes disgusting.

Cool, so I could get my nails done and watch TV ;-)
It would be nice for a while, I'm sure but I prefer real travelling and wandering around a real environment. This is a holiday for people who's leisure time is spent in shopping malls.

Now now. I went on a cruise for my honeymoon. We traveled to Key West, Cozumel, Mexico and Costa Maya, Mexico. The ship is a blast on its own but the excursions offer you a chance to do lots of other things. We went snorkeling in Cozumel, had our picture taken underwater with fish, and drove across a remote area of Mexico through mangroves and farmland to a beautiful private beach. Sounds like you should check it out Dave. It could be fun for your next trip.

LOL.. I'm actually in Utah right now, although it's not far from home I purposely left my friend at home.. mostly because as much as I like him the two of us in my car for a whole day with his marlboro lights is more than I can stand..
and yes, new theme... somebody speak up. I don't want to choose just yet. I want to make sure this thing is good and self supporting before I start adding my strange ideas...
what about you? hmmm.....:D have you picked out a theme yet? I don't feel like doing a search there's getting to be more than a few threads to try to keep track of who said what on what week....

How about something that is iconic of your town/city? You know; like the Empire State Building for NYC, the Golden Gate Bridge for SF, Eifel Tower for Paris, "The Big Potato" for Boise Idaho :-D (EDIT: My apologies to the inhabitants of Driggs, Idaho; the home of the ACTUAL "Big Potato") Could be an iconic person too I suppose...like Paul Bunyon.

I like this idea. It would be interesting to see what different towns have as icons, as we know, most don't have something as well known as the Empire State building, but every town seems to have something. I know what I would do, as I've been talking about taking these pictures for a year, now. This would be just the kick-in-the-pants I need to get the job done. And, unlike last weekend, we don't have any scheduled shoots that would prevent us from getting out and about this week.

Which had the most Google entries? Frued would have plenty to say about Idaho culture if it was the weiner ;)
One thing I enjoyed in Aussie was the big advertising stuff   We don't have that in the UK much.

Hello All :)
There's a "Big Potato" in a small town called Roberston in NSW over here ... a self professed potato growing centre (I don't think they have much else to identify with). It's a large, lumpy brown "thing" next to the main street. A local tells me that unfortunately most people don't first think "potato" when they see it :)
I like the idea of this worldwide photo day ... I'm going to try to get in on the action this weekend!

I hope I can find what I am looking for to shoot this weeks theme. Charlotte, NC is known for a couple things so I will just have to see what this weekend brings. Actually right now the PGA is in town for the Wachovia (hint hint, BANK) Golf Championship. Next weekend is a NASCAR race. Should be very interesting.

Ok, so is this the theme: 'my local icon', i.e. a person, object, anything iconic where you live?

I like this idea. Perth has quite a few possibilities with its long history.
Are you going to start the thread soon, Condyk? In some parts of the world the weekend starts in <24 hours! :)

I know Doc ... Sari is the rightful final decider and start up Queen tho' ;) It could a very funny and informative one this week.
I might pretend I am Australian myself if we go with the theme because most usual Brummie icons are 5 minutes from my office during the week and I don't fancy going down there again on Saturday just to take a shot. I might do something more local tho' because there are some nice local landmarks and stuff.

I love the local icon idea... and yeah, I generally start the thread on Friday (my time) that way in Australia it's up by Saturday... but if that's a little late let me know (global time difference is a little confusing) and I can start it earlier if necessary...

Hmmm
My local icon...
This will be interesting - Bondi Beach, The Bridge and Opera House have been done to death... I shall have to think about this one...
