What a great way to wrap up my senior year in college... Bill Nye the Science Guy came to visit us yesterday evening and since I've been doing work for the campus paper for the last month or so, I had access to our press pass, which gave me an isle seat in a pretty nice spot. I was 3rd row from the back, but I had my 70-200mm (just f/4 sadly) and it got me close enough for the most part. I should have moved around and physically gotten closer for some closeups, but I'm always self-conscious about getting in other people's way when shooting and making such a racket with my 20D.
In any regards, here's a few shots I got. All are handheld with my Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens at either ISO 800 or 1600.
I shot in RAW, so if anyone has any ideas for how I might produce better results (for example I'd like to be able to get the colors to pop a little more), I'm all ears :)
1. He started out mentioning Earth Day and went into the issues of global warming and such. This is actually a composite of 2 images- I developed the RAW and exposed for him and then exposed it for the overall scene... because when I shot it, due to the spotlight, he was really washed out and it looked bad... it's still not quite there, but it's a much better result.

2. Later he got into talking about The Origin of Species and natural/sexual selection. He gave the ladies in the audience a wink when discussing the latter.

3. At the end they gave him a bow tie from Julian's, which is a men's dress-clothing store here by campus that makes a lot of UNC Chapel Hill related items, such as the tie. Bill thought it was cool, put it on and gave a thumbs up

4. This was one of my earlier shots, but I saved it for last because I think it's my favorite of the evening. Although it's not depicting him in his "the science guy" comical antics, the shot came out almost exactly as I had hoped (I wish the spotlight hadn't blown out his shirt so much though, and a few other minor things)
