What a great way to wrap up my senior year in college... Bill Nye the Science Guy came to visit us yesterday evening and since I've been doing work for the campus paper for the last month or so, I had access to our press pass, which gave me an isle seat in a pretty nice spot. I was 3rd row from the back, but I had my 70-200mm (just f/4 sadly) and it got me close enough for the most part. I should have moved around and physically gotten closer for some closeups, but I'm always self-conscious about getting in other people's way when shooting and making such a racket with my 20D.

In any regards, here's a few shots I got. All are handheld with my Canon 70-200mm f/4 lens at either ISO 800 or 1600.

I shot in RAW, so if anyone has any ideas for how I might produce better results (for example I'd like to be able to get the colors to pop a little more), I'm all ears :)

1. He started out mentioning Earth Day and went into the issues of global warming and such. This is actually a composite of 2 images- I developed the RAW and exposed for him and then exposed it for the overall scene... because when I shot it, due to the spotlight, he was really washed out and it looked bad... it's still not quite there, but it's a much better result.

2. Later he got into talking about The Origin of Species and natural/sexual selection. He gave the ladies in the audience a wink when discussing the latter.

3. At the end they gave him a bow tie from Julian's, which is a men's dress-clothing store here by campus that makes a lot of UNC Chapel Hill related items, such as the tie. Bill thought it was cool, put it on and gave a thumbs up

4. This was one of my earlier shots, but I saved it for last because I think it's my favorite of the evening. Although it's not depicting him in his "the science guy" comical antics, the shot came out almost exactly as I had hoped (I wish the spotlight hadn't blown out his shirt so much though, and a few other minor things)

He's the coolest "nerd" I've seen, I loved his show while growing up, and still like it, the big rat scared on his show me sometimes though. Nice shots. Is their a way I can see him? does he tour (may sound like a dumb question but).

I'm not sure if he does like a normal "tour", but I know this talk was one in a series he had been doing recently. I don't know if he's done now or where to go to find out, really.

I do know that he said he was flying to Boston this morning to talk to some people abut a new show he wants to do... his proposed name is Nye 11 Science Emergency. I really hope he's able to do a new show, I always absolutely loved watching him when he was on the air.

Man I wished I knew he was in town. We used to do work with him on another show called "almost live" in Seattle - it was a show that came on before Saturday Night Live - kind of a warm up shot. Very cool.

Cool! But unfortunately I doubt you would have been able to go... though if you had knowßn, I could have given you a ticket, as I ended up with 2 extras. It was first opened to students at UNC to get tickets for free by showing our student cards (OneCard), and it "sold" out within 3 hours of them going on "sale". We were limited to 2 tickets per student, and I ended up not using either of mine since I was able to use the press pass... and unfortunately I wasn't able to find a couple other people that were free in time to use mine.

my brother does this :) he teaches a number of highschool-level science classes and uses Bill Nye videos from time to time
