What do you think? Too dark? Does it need sharpening?

Too dark - a little bit I think
Sharpening - yes
Also perhaps a touch more contrast its all a bit grey - you could get away with it in a msity scene, but I would try a little more contrast.
What about cropping the right hand side back to the tree nearest the water so that it forms a frame? I dont think the far right tree and the bushes are adding very much.

Thanks for confirming my feelings. I went back to Photoshop and started over; crop, fill flash, USM and contrast.
Better? Is it worth keeping or should I start over from the camera up?

The mist is now a darker grey... I prefer the first version

hhmm,
That looks like roughly what I had in mind.
However I agree with stopbath, it has now made the mist a bit dark.
Perhaps you could merge the two with layer masks?
but I don't think that it will suddenly be a lot better.
I think I would keep it, but I wouldn't expect to win any prizes with it!

it looks like youve over sharpened it.
i actually prefer the first one, with some dodging on the branches on the top. a curves adjustment could help
i still like the pic

I agree with the over sharpening. What is dodging and can I do it with Photoshop Elements?
Thanks for the comments.

Thanks for the comments and the constructive criticism. I will try to take a similar shot the next time the river is misted over with exposer bracketing to see if I can find the right balance for this type of shot.
