I'm winding up to pull the trigger and order a 70-200 f/4 and the tripod rings that some of the big lenses come with intrigue me. They have a big foot at the base of the ring - does this then attach directly to the tripod mount, or do you need an adapter?
BTW, I am under the impression that the 70-200 f/4 does not need a ring anyway as it's not that heavy - is this correct? I know it comes as an (expensive) extra with this lens.
Thanks,
steve

Yes, tripod mount rings attach directly to tripod mount. Foot is for additional stability when used with some quick release plates. And on really big lenses (e.g. 500mm f/4 L) foot also acts like carrying handle.
Tripod mount ring for 70-200mm f/4 L is not necessary, but it's nice feature. Combo balances better and switching from landscape to portrait orientation is very easy.

Most users of this lens will tell you not to get it. The lens isn't that heavy but when using it on a tripod the ring sure helps balance the combination out. You can get the black one in the US for $30 less than the white ring. At least thats what I did.

Thanks for the pics, Bluedog! I assume that the black ring is the one sold for the 200 f/2.8 L? It looks good, but I have to admit I probably wouldn't need it at this stage. I'm just starting to get my 'ideal compromise' set of lenses together - a judicious mix of reasonable price, good quality and sensible weight....- while divesting myself of consumer zooms.

Thanks and your 100% correct _ ignore what they say it fits.

Personally, I think that the black one looks better on this lens also.

I'd agree, you get a nice black and white stripe effect which balances nicely.
Maybe I'll have to get the tripod ring after all....

The ease of switching from vertical to horizontal alone makes it worth the investment.

I got the white one because in Australia the price difference wasn't that great. Having got it, I'd hesitate using the lens without it, as it balances especially well on a monopod.
