are the ultrasonic motors THAT much better than regular lenses?? im trying to save money but i would not mind spending dough on getting a much more better shot. advice is greatly appreciated

Faster, quieter, and more accurate focusing. I often don't even contemplate a non-USM lens, not only because of the inferior focus mechanism, but often because those lenses often lack in IQ as well. (cheaper lenses don't get USM) :-D

Makes a difference in the ways stated above... go into a camera store and compare the 50mm 1.8 and the 50mm 1.4 in focusing speed and accuracy.. you'll certainly notice a big difference :)

that and I'm very hesitant to consider one that doesn't use ftm. The only reason I will get the 50 1.4 and ditch the 1.8.
