Hello folks...I have been reading review after review on lenses in the 20-70mm range and on my very limited budget I have narrowed it down to 2 lenses for my 350d they are the sigma AF 17-70 f-2.8-4.5 DC macro and the tamron AF SP 28-75 2.8 XR Di LD ......obviously some people are going to say that both these lenses are inferior to canon L glass etc. but my job is not secure and I need to buy a lens now before its too late so I cant save any more than the £200-250 needed to buy one now.....I want the lens as a walkabout and it will be on the camera permanently. I was thinking of a 50mm canon prime but it might be a bit 'too' limiting. Will these lenses work ok with my 220EX flash (I read somewhere that there might be a problem with the ETTL ???? All advice is thankfully accepted!!! ( go easy I,m a newbie)..................................dave h

One drawback, as I see it, with the Sigma choice is it doesn't have a constent maximun aperture. I have not used or researched the Tamron you mention, but, I do know many on this forum like it very much.

For a single maximum use all rounder lens it's hard to see much beyond the 17-70mm judging from reviews and user feedback. I'm considering a decent high value lens like this myself. On walkaround I mainly use the 18-40mm ish range so it's valuable to have that side covered as a minumum. The Tamron from experience isn't wide enough tho' does a great job otherwise. I think the 18-50mm 2.8 Sigma is similar priced so worth a good hard look because you get the faster aperture through the range. At the end of the day we all know a lens takes you so far and, really, the shooter makes the bigger difference, so don't worry about needed L glass. You really don't.

Tamron is not so wide on a camera like 350d IMHO.
Go for a lens thar start from 18mm. like Sigma 18-50 2.8 or 17-70 2.8-4.5.
