Hello,
My name is Joseph vala. I am an independent photographer out of illinois. I have been shooting live music for about 3 years now, and let me tell you, I have learned a lot about the limitations of equipment and of the mind. I am going to post a few shots from my portfolio, looking for feedback.
Photography is such an amazing way to express yourself. I have found thnat never giving up and shooting as much as possible will always help you. I would suggest to those just beginning that you need to be absolutely familar with your camera and its funtionality. Also knowing when to watch the show and not shoot, lighting is your friend not yoru enemy, learn the patters of teh lights, also pay attention to the artists movement, they will always have a stopping poiint when swaying back and forth for instance, you can time your shots so that you takethe picture when the band members hits that stopping point giving you maximum clarity in low light. Also one of tehg major things i have learned is if you have a shaky hand then you NEED a monopod or an expensive image stabalizing lense.
Well here are the shots look forward to your comments:
(could not get them to work in here, php gallery i guess)
I removed these so that if you wanted to see them you could go to the galleries: http://www.kickmedown.com/media

Oh, give it time.
The first thing that strikes me: The watermark is very distracting. Personally, I would move it.
In the first shot, if you're going to go that wide, I'd prefer to see the entire musician in the shot, and not cut off mid-calf.
The fourth shot, of Chuck Garvey (never heard of him) is pretty nice. Unfortunately, you've fallen victim to the demon "magenta" color of lighting. Nothing you can really do about that. Even when the focus is perfect, it usually looks pretty soft.
I thought the shot of the guy with the ball cap and sunglasses was a photo of a golfer. Some context, as far as widening the shot to include an amp, a guitar, a microphone, etc., would help. I didn't see the keyboard in the glasses until I looked at the photo a fourth time.
I'll say this for Buckethead: he makes for some interesting photos.
Of the series, I like the one of Chris Robinson most. I love the reflection in those Foster Grants...

maybe not. better leave ;)
lol. newbie mistake number one - demanding attention for oneself.
if i had a dollar for every newbie on a photo or band board that shows up out of nowhere and acts like everybody was suppose to come running to comment on their pics / music and if it doesn't happen, acts indignant as if indeed, other people were suppose to be just waiting around to advise and flatter others.
i think there is some saying about 'he who wants to be first, shall be last and he who wants to lead, shall first serve" or something. or more simply, do unto others as one would like done unto them.
if you want to get angry and leave. okay, you can do that. But why not instead do unto others and stay and take the time to review, comment and flatter others and am sure then when you ask they will respond?
you know. give some to get some. maybe the world would be a better place.
yeah, i know, silly me :D

okay, I will give one comment while the guy mulls over what i said . . . hopefully in good humor . . . dueling is still illegal isn't it :D
i don't think the watermark is that distracting that, at least for me, to still "Get the just" / appreciate or evaluate the overall pic.
and obviously, it's in the most effective location to prevent someone from cropping it out.
it's sort of like in the music realm, where for me, all but the worst quality of recording won't prevent me from still hearing the "melody" or "hook" if it exists.
other people's mileage may vary.
