What a strange bird. We have nothing like it in the US that I know of. It looks like a kingfisher in a clown suit.

Hoopoes - Upupa epops - are widespread and locally common in central and southern Europe, particularly abundant in southern Spain and Portugal.

In Portuguese, Upupa epops is called "poupa". I was looking in http://www.birdguides.com and found the English name "Hoopoe".
Sorry I don't know how to promounce this name ...
