Does anyone have any suggestions on how to eliminate severe red eye with my Cannon prwershot S 40? Takes great pix but lots of red eye with my grand kids. I know the instructions say have the subject look at the red eye reduction flash but that is tough with 3 year olds.
Is there software that will correct red eye?

I too end up with a lot of photos of my 10mo old with bad red-eye; like you say, it is hard to get her to look at the red-eye reduction lamp.
What software came with your camera, or what are you trying to use?
If you are looking for something like click a button that says "remove red-eye" and then it disappears, I haven't found it yet. If someone else knows where to find such a thing, please let us know.
Almost all of photo editing software will let you fix red-eye, but it usually envolves painting over the red by one way or another. Some software makes it easier than others. The Photoshop LE that came with my G2 dosn't have the "red-eye brush" that Photoshop ($$$$$) has, but you can still load up a picture and then paint the red black using the paintbrush.
Paintshop Pro ($69-$80ish) has a tool that will allow you to click the red-eye and it will fix it sudo automatically. This tool works pretty well for pictures where the person is looking at you, but for shots where they are partially looking away it is a little harder (you have to outline the pupil and then have the software fix it). I kind of like the red-eye tool in this program, but I don't use the rest of the software nearly enough to justify buying - have a few days left on the demo copy.
Something I am looking at now is Adobe Photoshop Elements ($69-$99). It has the same red-eye brush as the full Photoshop package. This package has my interest at the moment because it has a lot of powerful features if you want them, but it also makes "basic adjustments" to pictures very easy as well. Adobe has a 30 day free trial, but it is a 50+ meg download from their homepage. This program may be worth checking out.
I haven't used, but I did notice that www.shutterfly.com has a red-eye removal tool for pictures that you upload and are going to have "developed" from shutterfly. It looked like it was pretty simple, but if you want it for pictures you want to keep digital, it isn't of any use.
I'm still looking for the perfect red-eye removal tool too.
Alright, enough rambling. All these words and I don't really think I helped you. If I come across the "perfect tool" I will let you know.

Eliminating red eye with candid, children, and animals is difficult to impossible. Adults will be able to look at a light bulb or strong light source and reduce pupil size before the picture. Personally, I hate the redeye flash, makes me dizzy.:eyes
Lots of lower cost image programs do a great job of removing red eye and easy to use. My favorite is Picture-it Photo. You just click on the eyes and click ok and it is almost perfect every time, except animals. Photoshop also can be used but is not as easy.
I read the other message and decided to edit this message. The Picture-it Photo program is almost free now. I saw it at Staples for about $40 with a $20 mail-in rebate. There are a couple of other features that I like with this program as well. (Printing, e-mail prep) The pureists go nuts when you don't use Photoshop, but there is a place and a time. :)

Yes... there sure is "software" to fix this. :)
If you have, or can get, Photoshop, then you'll have all you need.
Fredmiranda have a free action plugin for photoshop, which can help you, if you dont want to spend all your time editing manually.
Get it here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/Action_profilesPage/Red_eye/RedEyeRemoval.zip
.. or just search the net for tutorials, if you have time to read them all :)

Photoshop Elements has a built-in redeye brush that works great. If you have LE, you can get Elements for less than $50 after rebate.

Move the flash as far away from the camera as possible. Red eye is caused by the flash reflecting off the back of the eye, directly back into the camera lens. Stand mounted flash units work best, but even flash brackets that mount to the camera with an extra cord work resonable well when you have to be moving around. Bounce flash can also help since the light isn't as harsh and comming from a different angle. Photoshop can do wonders for redeye, and you don't really need fancy filters and plug ins, unless you're doing real close ups. This cat has a major case of red eye, but a quick touch up with ps and you can hardly tell.

Google's Picasa also has red eye removal if you're looking for free and easy software.

The OP has a Powershot, so I don't believe this is an option. The way I see it, post processing is going to be the best option, since as the person above has pointed out, the best way to eliminate the red eye itself is to get the flash out of the same line as the camera.

To the red-eye problem—there are tons of free and almost-free programs to correct red eye. Just google "red-eye reduction".
To the old-thread problem—I think that once a thread has gon a year without any postings it should be locked. In that way, it would still be available for archival purposes, bot couldn't be randomly resurrected.
There are enough zombies in the world already.
