I have to admit that I was feeling a bit nervous about this meeting. Deepest, darkest Wiltshire on a pagan festival scared me... wicker men and all that...
Unfortunately (for you lot) I survived.
#1 Here's a shot in my new tradition of posting dodgy landscape photos disguised as race shots
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/CRW_0326.jpg
#2 Something a little closer
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/CRW_0342.jpg
#3 There were a lot of these silly German cars with the engine in the wrong place about...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/CRW_0441.jpg
#4 Errrmmm... dunno. I used the 50mm f/1.4...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/LJ8J6536.jpg
#5 Cars in assembly waiting to go out... 50mm f/1.4 again
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/LJ8J6541.jpg
#6 Minis from the Mini Se7en series... I've seen a lot of minis this weekend.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/LJ8J6762.jpg
#7 Ah... more Porsche thingies...
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/LJ8J6869.jpg
#8 A failed attempt at an architectural shot. The Formula Ford got in the way and snatched focus
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ukmotorsportpics/ccmay/LJ8J6897.jpg
#9 There's this handy little bump on the exit to the corner. If you catch it just right, then you get powerful cars with a front paw in the air like this. If you catch it wrong, you get a blurry car. Of course, you could cheat and crank up the shutter speed and "spray and pray" it... If you do that when I am there, I will point at you and laugh. I also might poke you with my monopod :p

#10 This was quite a quick toy. It's billed as a TVR Sagaris but I believe it's a silhouette bodied Tuscan.

Anyway, those are the pictures. After 3 days of photography I've sort of lost the will to live. My right arm hurts like the blazes and I doubt if I could even hold a camera. This has been getting worse for weeks and I reckon I might need to take a break.
The rest of the pictures are here http://gallery.ukmotorsportpics.com/c944088.html
Thanks for looking, C&C welcome.

Nice shots Glenn. I was trying to get the porkers going over that bump - with limited success. Good catch.
I'm liking #5 too.

What with landscape photography (you need some help there by the way) and a couple of recent pan shots, I suggest you are in need of a rest as the hard work is getting to you.
The Porsche are like terriers, they love to cock a leg given the chance. On really fast corners you can even get them on two wheels, never mind three. They are incredibly photogenic, just like Tuscans are, and you always get a good turnout.
I nearly did the "is your camera broken" bit to a machine gun charlie stood next to me the other day, but instead I turned the scanner volume up so I couldn't hear it. :)
I really do like the mix of shots, even the Rover and any TVR shot is a collector's item now.

The Formula One test at Silverstone was embarrassing. There was 2 or 3 guys in particular who were firing off like 15 shots (yes really) EVERY time EVERY came past, lap after lap - WHY!!! They wern't just using a little kit lens either, oh no, 1D's with 100-400's and even some fella with a 400 prime. Ridiculous. I just start laughing out loud and have to walk away swiftly. I admit I have had a "rush of blood" ONCE and that was at the Formula One test in February, there was only 1 car on track doing like 1 lap an hour so I was pretty "keen" to get a few shots in, but even then I didn't resort to a "machine-gun-frenzy"  :p
Anyway... back to topic. Nice shots as usual Glenn, #5 and #9 for me :) Like the composition and DoF of #5 and really just like the look and colour of that Porsche  You've been rather busy this weekend as have the Mini's and Ginetta's etc - though they created more work for themselves with the carnage at Brands  :p

Forgot to mention, we had Tim Hood in the FloGas Sagari V8 at Oulton Park for the TVR Challenge the other week. Came 3rd, well behind Darren Dowling who really knows how to handle a real Tuscan.

Really nice TVR what_ever_it_is Glenn - sharp, nice angle, clean background and veryyyy photogenic. Ever thought about sharpening the end of your monopod? Could be good to stand the camera upright when you want a cup of coffee and a few other uses as well.

 You think? I've always considered that the problem I have with landscapes is that they don't move fast enough... I haven't worked out a solution to that one yet. ;)

Tim had the advantage over Darren and the other Tuscans at Combe. Perhaps the faster, flatter circuit suits the Sagaris better?

Thanks for the comments guys, I forgot to mention that the first three were taken with the 10D, the others with the 1D Mk II.
We did have one spray and pray merchant next to us at Combe for a short while. EOS 1D with 70-200mm f/4L. He machine gun panned the cars as they came past twisting the zoom ring on the poor little f/4L frantically. I am deeply curious as to whether he got anything worthwhile out of it - I suspect not. His girlfriend/wife/significant other who's duty seemed to be to hand him replacement CF cards looked impressed. I sat on the boot lip of my car and laughed at him. I resisted poking him with my monopod. ;)

Nice shots.
What is your main motorsport lens? the 100-400 IS?

No, I rarely use the 100-400L for motorsports. My two main lenses are the Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX prime and the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 EX zoom.

The Porsche, Mini and Trevor shots do it for me
The National circuit at Silverstone produced a great race between the "Sagari" and Tuscans....seems they need a slowish track to produce the goods.
There was no pagan action at Combe, well not while the outsiders were still about:p;)

#9 and #10 are good, but the best IMHO is #6. Great shot showing lots of cars racing, and those minis are just incredibly photogenic!
Hope your 'photographers elbow' clears up soon......sure you can get cream for it....
Cheers,
Simon.

whats your general approach for action motorsports shots then?
Do you still use burst mode but only two or three? or do you aim for one good shot per car/corner?
I want to try this but as a beginner I'd appreciate any suggestions so as not to get into bad habits straight away

Well there are many ways to skin a cat. ;) Personally I have the camera in AI Servo Focus / Single Frame drive mode and try and time my shots.
