Okey, here is a little story on my 10D and a sunrise shoot.
I was shooting (2nd of Sep) on beside a lake in a middle part of Finland with my 10d, Canon EF 24-85mm F3.5-4.5 and a tripod. Time was approx 6.45am and it was pretty windy. Had my camera on a tripod and at this time I had taken approx. 20-30 images with different settings... just playing with the camera (2 weeks old)...
Then it started to rain a little bit...just few drops...I placed my carrying bag on top of the camera just to protect it.
One thing to mention here is that it was pretty cold (5 degrees Celsius) so I was moving a little bit to keep my self warm...
I guess some of you (if not all) are guessing where this is heading.
I was 10 metres away from my tripod (camera attached, carrying bag as a hood)...then the wind REALLY started to blow. I started to walk towards the camera...got to 7 metres…saw the tripod tilt a little bit (thanks for the hood that created the needed square centimetres for the wind)...started running and got to 4 metres and saw the system go down (10d was on 1.5m height)....optics hit first, and there was not sand to soften the blow, it was solid rock...
After some screaming, swearing and 2 hours of sleeping, I checked the full damage. Immediately as the accident happened I saw that the optics was gone (tilted with a huge scratch on the lens). Further examination showed that the camera powered on, AF did not function, but I was able to take shots with manual focus…it seemed that the camera survived. There are no marks on the body and functionality is there (magnesium body to thank at least to some extend)…
On next day I bought a Tamron lens (AF 28-75mm F/2.8 ) and did test shoots with it. Still I have not noticed any problems, but then again there could be something over time…There is quiet rattling sound when I shake the camera, but if I remember correctly it is natural (saw a post on this)…please correct me if I am wrong. Also if somebody has had similar situations…would appreciate if you could share your thoughts on what I might expect to be wrong on the camera and how to test it.
Well, at the end of the day I learned something…hope that you wont get to similar situation…
