We all know the digi 2 made canon top in the speed stakes but it's being out a while now is it not time for a digi 3 processor to come out so we can all go for a upgrade ?

better image quality, a more advanced processing algorithm?

better processing algorithm's is the main thing as thats the processing power let's face it computers come a long way in just a few month's - digi 2 has been around 2 years or more and as most on here know's Canon's A1servo is very hit and miss even with the 1dmk2 .
i know i shoot extream stuff Fast single seat jets and birds in flight but it must be time for a camera that can hit the spot better that what i have now in A1servo.

for those who shoot RAW, what advantage does better processing bring? Am I wrong to assume that when you shoot raw, you are bypassing the image processor and doing the processing yourself in a raw conversion software package more or less?

I don't think the Digic 2 chip does the AF processing. All it does is provide a hardware dedicated raw processor. Essentially, its just a very fast version of the Canon Raw software, with less options.
If you shoot Raw, then its completely useless. The 300D and the 350D have different DIGIC's, but shooting Raw, you wouldn't use either, so its down to the sensor for image quality. Anything Digic does, you can do on your PC.

My thinking is that if all (or most) of Canon's new compact model now come with DigiC 2 the pro models are then on the same level which make no senses for the pro users. I'm sure that Canon's got a few tricks up its sleeves...

digic processor processes EVERY pixel grabbed by the camera and converts them into RAW or JPEG images to write to the card. RAW does not mean UNTOUCHED. the faster te processor the faster the files get dumped to the card (well, there is more to it, but the processor is important). it has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with AF, 1DMkII has two dedicated processors for that task only, one makes sure that stuff is in focus, the other one controlls the lense's adjustments. I think 1DMkII is rated at 200 or so km/h as the top speed where AIServo is able to predict the focus, so I guess the jets have to go with a really big dof... :)

1DMkII can track a subject moving at 300kph @ 20m distance - assuming you have a decent lens fitted of course.
