Can the center post of the Bogen 3021n/3021pro be removed completly so the head can be mounted directly onto the "spider" part of the legs?

Yes, I have one of these too. you can unscrew the part on the bottom of the center post and then remove the center post. Use the part you removed in the center of the legs. They may have modified this since I got my tripod but you place the knob on the center bracket sideways so it fits. Then you can mount the head to the screw that is facing up (I think). If I'm wrong, I'll check it out when I get home and post a picture. I couldn't find any pictures of this on thier web site. It also seems that they have modified the product line since I bought my a few years ago. Try it and report back.

They did update the design. Of course just after I bought mine.

The current models come with a two-piece center post. You can, as I did, buy the center post as a part and replace the original - making your old tripod have the feature just like the new ones.
