Hi all

I spent last weekend looking for the Harlequin Duck. It's not the easiest duck to capture but I got rather lucky this time. ;-) Hope you like the outcome. Please feel free to comment.

Okay, that did it. Iceland is on my list of places to visit.

Great shots, once again, Sindri.

Excellent shots Sindri - thanks for sharing these as I haven't seen one although I have heard about them. I have added them to my short list of gorgeous ducks: Manadrin, Wood and now also Harlequin.

Awesome shots! Very sharp, great scenery. Possibly the most beautiful duck. We in NJ are lucky enough to get nearly the largest population on the east coast in the same area every winter. It's always a 'must see' for birders. They are so approachable and seem happy to get their pictures taken!

Terrific shots, Sindri. It was well worth your search!! All shots of the ducks are so sharp and colorful; they really show how beautiful these ducks are. And the water in #3 and #5 looks so real, it looks like its going to come pouring out of my monitor_and the ducks right along with it. Fantastic job!!

All of them are very well done, but I really like this one. Harli's are such beautiful ducks and you have done them justice with this series! Were these all taken with the Bigma?

Thank you all for the nice comments. They are appreciated. :-)

zach - "Were these all taken with the Bigma?"

Yes, these are all taken with the Bigma at 500mm.

Paul - "Are these salt water ducks?"

During the winter they stay at sea (so yes they are) but during the breeding season in the spring they spread up the rivers.

ngannet, you are very lucky to have harlequin ducks that are approachable. Love this duck. ;-) We have quite a few places where you can get pretty close but if you get too close they are off. This is only the second time I have been able to get this close to them. I had been crawling at the edge of a riverbank, trying to get closer to a couple that was standing on a stone in the middle of the stream when they got spooked. I decided to lay still for a while and that paid off. A whole flock landed in the river right in front of me and I was able to shoot till my card ran out of space. I sure had fun this weekend. ;-)
