Assuming this is candid shot I'll over look the stray hair and the jacket collar. I would say it is a good shot but it needs something more to make it pop or something to catch my attention more. The colors seem flat and yet not flat enough to give it a glowing effect. BTW she is very pretty. Thanx for sharing.

Thanks. Most definitely a candid shot. And after she saw me take it, she wasn't too happy.

I appreciate your comments. Can they be accomplished with PP? If so, have a go at it.

mark So what did she say to you and your response? Just curious because she looks like shes alittle upset.

She said nothing. And she was with what appeared to be her boyfriend, a rather large, good looking guy too.

It's just that when I pointed the camera at her again, she looked away.

MDJAK the color is perfect. The girl is stunning. Cudos on the photo.

Sometimes it pays to walk up to the girl, complement her with something along the lines of:
"i could not help noticing you in the crowd.
You are very beutiful.
I took a couple of snapshots of you, hope you don't mind .
I'll gladly send them to you if you'd like. Here's my e-mail/or card.

Well that takes guts. But for most women, when they see a big camera and a photographer that took the time to come over and complement them, will melt right down.

It's a great way to meet ppl.
Maybe she just got to NY, with hopes of modeling. And you'd be like, all I want to take some photos of you, I don't have a studio yet but we could meet in Central park (or any other place you can think of)early in the morning on (insert day ) or around the sunset on (insert day).. and I'm not one of those weirdos or anything you can bring your boyfriend if you want. we'll take some photos I'll gladly print any of them for your portfolio .

isn't it illegal to take photos of someone without permission?
with expections, but.. i dunno, always thought there was a 'release' that needed signing or something, so i never bothered to take photos of strangers unless i'm at an event where they know they're being photographed
maybe i'm lost lol

nice photos but, especially for candids.

she definatly reminds me of Eva Mendes!

as for MattyB, i'm not 100% sure, but i think you might be right, in terms of direct portrait of a specific person. However if it was like a general shot of the street, and the person just happened to be in your photo, then i think it's legal.

I'm not going to quote law, but I will say from my general understanding people in public are fair domain, especially if the photo is not being used for commercial purposes.

In addition, this was taken at the David Blaine spectacle by Lincoln Center wherein he had large signs warning all comers that it was being filmed and by coming by they waived any right they may have had against being photographed and taped. When I get home, I'll post a picture of the sign. I thought it was interesting.

Thanks for the compliments, people. Now, who is this Mendes girl?

That is indeed excellent advice. Thank you. I'm kind of a shy person, but I've been getting better. In this case, I took a picture of another girl who made a slight face at me. I went right over to her and said: Look. You're a very pretty girl. Next time I need you to smile for me, and she said okay, and I took another couple of shots of her. We hit it off and started talking. She was from France, is living in Brooklyn, and may want me to do her upcoming wedding.

Here she is. Her name is Alex. (Taken with my new 85 f1.2L. Need to get used to the razor thin DOF, that's for sure.

I agree, maybe it'll be something i'll try next time. I like the way MD said it :), "look you're a pretty girl, next time i need you to smile for me" makes it sound demanding yet at the same tiem flattering... hard to say no to that i'd think! haha. definatly will need to try that line when i go photograph people.
