OK. I searched and didn't find this exact topic. My gallery isn't complete enough to count, so I thought I'd let others with real talent post theirs!

The print selling is the obvious plus to Smugmug. I just purchased my service, so I haven't had the opportunity to sell anything yet. My ad comes out in the paper tomorrow, so we'll see if it makes a difference. It's against Flickr terms of service to use it as a commercial site. It's strictly a photo-sharing site.

A few questions: are you all satisfied with the sales ? I'm interested in joining but I do have some doubts. Also, for those who knows, is that an exclusive contract od are you free to sell trough other channels ? And what you recommend, the standard or the pro account ? And how do they pay ? Im overseas and of course I don't have an US account, do they use paypal, Western Union or what ? Sorry for all the questions but I'm really interested...

Here's mine.
http://coloradosprings.smugmug.com/
It's brand new so there is not much in it. There will be a lot more photos added in the next few weeks. I'm trying to crop my photos a little looser so they can be printed in different aspect ratios and still be pleasing to the eye. (4:5 to 4:6)
I chose ColoradoSprings as my nickname because it is easy to remember and it doesn't tie me down to any particular style of photography. I would like to be known as a community photographer willing to shoot anywhere in the local area.
Any comments and suggestions (good or bad) would be appreciated.

Watermarks annoy the hell out of me. Besides, I want to allow folks share the photos with friends and family. It's good word-of-mouth advertising in hopes that they will come back later and purchase the high-quality prints.
I only share the small and medium sizes, good enough for e-mail. I lock down the originals and large sizes.

Hi, I notice a lot of you neither watermark nor right click protect your images, do you not worry about your images being used without permission?
i used the watermark for awhile but it takes away so much from the photos its not worth it..i do right click protect the shots but thats just way to easy to get around if you have any knowledge of computers at all. Whenever you post a shot tyhere is a chance it will get lifted... it sucks but it is a fact of the internet. Just gotta hope it never happens and if it does, hope you find out about it so you can at least go after the person to get paid!

i will let you know when i get my check!
They pay quarterly i believe so i got like $45.00 coming or something like that. They wont pay you unless you send them a form from the IRS.. i believe there is some other criteria for over seas though..you can go to the site, it explains it all.
Im very happy with them so far..i got the pro acct. and its great. I only wish they had more templates so all the sites wouldnt look the same!
its not exclusive, you can sell anywhere you want..they are your pics and you own the rights to them, your only buying web space from smug mug... and the prints come out pretty nice, i had a couple blowups made and they look great!

Zacker is right on about the IRS form, you don't get anything until your paperwork is in order which they handle very quickly.
They pay quarterly if you have over a certain ammount that they owe you. I had a balance of $50.00 for well over a quarter. I think they will aso pay out any time that you request it.
Your sales info page always contains what you have sold and to whome, how much your profit is, and if it has been paid to you yet.

I'm out of that because I'm not an US citizen and fullfill the requirements for being exempt for that. Actually, they just need a mail and thats all. Sort of self certification.

Hi, I notice a lot of you neither watermark nor right click protect your images, do you not worry about your images being used without permission?
I usually only upload 800 or 1000px wide images, not a whole lot you can do with that, maybe a desktop background. If I ever upgrade to a pro account where I can set the prices for prints, I'll upload full size images. For now I sell a few here and there through other channels. I used to watermark as well, but it's too much of a hassle.
EOSAddict
10th of May 2006 (Wed), 14:53
I always upload full size images as I mainly use it for online backup but only allow 800px images in my public galleries.
Perhaps I'm a bit deluded thinking people might actually want to steal my images ;)
ImagineTNT
10th of May 2006 (Wed), 15:02
I used to watermark AND not allow large images but since I use 'protection' I now took off watermarking and let users view large images. I figure if they're smart enough to screen cap it then they can have it (images you can't even print with).

Sorry to come across as a bit thick, but in the pro pricing section, what's a digital print, as opposed to a common print?
MazerRakhm
10th of May 2006 (Wed), 20:04
The digital print has a different size to it, I foget what the dimensions are exactly. It's the size ratio for the smaller point and shoot digicams though.
ImagineTNT
10th of May 2006 (Wed), 21:03
From what I can tell that's the only difference between a digital print and common print. They basically "sorted" prints into four different sections as a way to make it easier for the customer to choose. I'm not a big fan of the User Interface of SmugMug but I can see their logic in doing this.

I agree. I read an article in a mag lately that talked about using a GPS handheld to mark each photo as it's taken. Interesting idea. Even better if it could be built into the camera easily and entered into EXIF data automatically! I may have to get a GPS unit before I go looking for landscapes out here (Colorado). It would be nice to know exactly where a picture was taken, for future reference. Maybe to come back in a different season or something...

You could suggest it in Forum Talk, but I think it's probably too small a topic to need it's own forum. Maybe it would be a good thread in General Chat or Talk About Photography?

This thread has been very helpful to me. I have had a website on smugmug for a couple of years - not to sell photos, but to have galleries to refer potential clients to see my work (mostly weddings and portraiture). I am now researching the best place to upload and sell my images. I can upgrade my smugmug, or go somewhere else.
One thing that I've noticed after going through this whole thread is that a lot of the people who are using smugmug don't seem to be professionals. So I'm concerned that the association might not be advantageous if I'm trying to present my business more professionally.
Would very much appreciate any feedback on this. I could maintain my galleries on smugmug and use an imaging service (like Bay Photo Lab, for instance) to upload and sell images from a photo shoot.
I LOVE photography - I don't care so much for the business end of it - but it is a fact of life, I guess . . .
By the way, my smugmug is: http://photo-art.smugmug.com

Here's mine: http://www.sso-images.com/ (also linked to my name below).
I created this just to manage increasing requests for photo shoots from friends, neighbors, acquaintances, etc. and NOT as a side business. I just hate dealing with "what should I charge to friends?" type of issues, so I decided to let my SmugMug account do the transactional issues while I just shoot. I don't want to say "no" to photo shoot requests coming from friends and there are enough requests that I don't want to do for free, either. SmugMug came to my rescue perfectly for my situation!! So I didn't spend much time trying to make my site fashionable or sleek. Just a very simple one to manage photo shoot requests and avoid dreadful headaches...

I guess I'm too old school to appreciate Twitter. Just seems like a lot of pointless banter with no content, no point.
Anywhere else a person can get some real information about SmugPro. I have a professional account but feel the service could use a lot of improvements to be really useful.

You can set the color by using the html code for that specific color....HERE'S (http://html-color-codes.com/) a link to the codes, then you have to specify the code in your CSS.

What level account do you have? The CSS edits are only available in power and pro levels.

Great SumgMug gallery! Can I ask how you set your site up like you did?
Do you have Pro, Power or Standard?
Did you have to pay more for having .com and not the .smugmug.com?
Sorry for all the Q's

This topic started 3 years ago - and there were actually some interchanges and comments. I posted some comments in July 2008.
I would like to challenge the many posters who now want critiques/comments on their own site to take the time to visit other's sites and give some feedback.
Just my two cents . . .
