Does the 10D have a built-in infrared receiver for a remote IR shutter release? None of the on-line or phone-in catalog dealers that I have contacted so far can tell me if any of the Canon D-series has one. My 10-year old Elan has an IR shutter release receiver built into the right side of the grip that I trip with my tiny RC-1 transmitter. This type of electronic shutter release function is imperative for macro/tripod work. I am trying to make the jump to digital, but if the new equipment can't measure up, I'll just stick with film and film scanner.

As far as Ï know, the only Digital EOS with that type of remote is the recently announced 300D / Digital Rebel. The 10D doesn't have that option

However it does have a cable release socket, which is equally good for tripod/macro work - and your batteries on the release won't ever go flat at the worse possible moment :)

Just because the 10D doesn't have an IR remote control shouldn't keep you from getting the 10D if that's where you're leaning. As anyone who's bought the 10D will tell you, the 10D more than measures up to any Elan film camera even without the IR remote. I also have the Elan with the IR remote and, as much as I miss that IR for group shots that I can be in, it's never come out of the camera bag since I bought the 10D. For macro/tripod work, as someone else pointed out, you can use a wired remote that attached to the side of the 10D and that serves the purpose very well.

And for getting into that group shot, well you can always do it the old fashion way...use the 10 second timer. :)

Go to http://www.canoneos.com/ and click on "EOS system chart" for a PDF file that lists all the accessories.

The 10D doesn't have a "built-in" IR port.

If you want a remote release, your choices are the wired TC-80N3 or RS-80N3 or the wireless LC-4.

It does NOT have a cable release socket.

I was forced to buy the TC-80N3, which is way cool, for multiple exposures, timed delay/release, very flexible....etc.

Or you can use the self-timer (10 secs.) If you set the "mirror lock-up", to reduce shutter vibration the delay is only two seconds.
