On Tuesday (5/2) there was a huge fire at the Greenpoint Terminal/Market Warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. I'd taken photos and posted some on FlickR, which was picked up by some local news sites. You can view a set here http://www.flickr.com/photos/mgchan/sets/72057594123690087/
I was contacted by someone who wanted to include this photo in a book with a 5-year exclusivity

My questions are:
How much should I charge for its use inside the book?
How much for inside and on the front cover?
How much for non-exclusive use inside the book?
Thanks!

Ask 10 people & you'll get 10 different answers, so...
New! See "Day rate against space" in NUJ Freelance Fees Guide. This is oriented toward UK photographers, but the info should be of general interest to everyone.

another resource: http://photographersindex.com/stockprice.htm
using that, a consumer book cover w/ a circulation of 500k-1m, averages about $1675.00 - you should assume that over a 5 year period, its more likely that 3-5million copies could exist of it - and there is no price listed for it... however you can do simple math
the really tricky thing here is not undervaluing your work while not over-pricing it forcing the publishing company to look elsewhere.
id do this... let them come to the table w/ a price first

May I ask how they found your pictures? Did the just find them on flickr and contact you?

I post to FlickR, using tags as a feed to a few sites. After one site used them in a story about the fire, other sites contacted me and used them as well. The book publisher saw them and contacted me through my Web site.

For a photograph with obvious economic value for multiple uses, if a publisher wants an exclusive right, most pros would charge 3 to five times the normal usage fee. You might be able to sell this photo many times, and the exclusive rights user must compensate you for the lost opportunity.
