I had my first try at event photography today and found that it's not for me. I like a total of three pictures out of the 200+ ones I took. Here's one...
These individuals were on their way to the stage to salute fallen law enforcement / fire personnel.
Comments? I used the 50 1.8 on my 350D.

Great idea for a shot! You pulled it off really well in my opinion. The far background of the photo might benefit from a bit of gaussian blur to soften the weird shapes, and maybe lighten the front guys face to really draw your attention to the left.

Overall nice composition.
I'd recommend some fill in to light the eyes under the caps and cropping the right a bit tighter.

Very nice shot. Three of 200+ really isn't bad, particularly if all three are as good as this one ... in Live Events you have to shoot things that may not work but might ... you have so little control of anything! And welcome to POTN ... hope you won't give this up too soon and you appear to see very well.

Yeah, I'm with the Professor on this one.
With live event photography, you have very little control over far too much. It really is "work with what ya' got".
Personally, I would think that three "keepers" out of 200 shots is a tad low, but that's me. I'm often not as critical as other photographers when it comes to my own work.
The shot above is excellent.
You say it's not for you. Can you expound on that a bit more?

Like you said, there are many things involved in which I have no control over. I may have said that comment in haste, so I'll try a couple more events and see what happends.
Also, thanks for the comments everyone. When I get home from work I plan on editing the shadows the hats are casting.
I had a few more than three I liked, but they were of the C-level corporate types, which aren't very fun to look at.

I'd suggest allowing yourself the time to shoot different types of events. Many of us here shoots concerts. While I can't speak for anyone else who does it, I see its' affect as a drug. I find myself wanting to shoot bands more and more...
