OK, so I'm tired of waiting and want to build my own site. How many of you have built something in frontpage? I don't want to spend a bunch of time learning it and find out that there was a better way.

So, show me your site and provide any insight that might help me in this journey.

I have put together my work site using Frontpage... but for my photoblog I opted to use Blogger and have it upload to my server.

Cheers, Rich

Frontpage is annoying. Totally. Get Dreamweaver if you can afford it. If not, there are other programs that are cheap that are better, I'm sure. I just don't know what they are on the PC.

I used Dreamweaver on mine, but it's not very good. Also, it's not photo-centric. The lack of quality is not Dreamweaver's fault, but mine! :-)

dadgum John! You're going to bag on a program to write webpages and you built one that could be done with a simple text editor! shame on you.

okay, just kidding. But Frontpage really isn't that bad...if you have nothing else to work with. I goof around with it at work and it's easy enough.

True, but I couldn't change it that quickly with a text editor. Besides, I refuse to work in HTML anymore. It's uneccessary! HTML is only good for fixing problems!

I also don't type my reports anymore with the old Underwood typewriter, but it could be done...

I have to use Frontpage at work sometime, and, although MS seems to be copying Adobe/Macromedia more and more, they're still a couple thousand years behind. Also, like all MS products, it assumes you're stupid and makes changes without your knowledge, which you end up having to fix later. That's the annoying part for me.

alright, maybe.

But the best way is to just pay someone else to design it! (like I will do 200 years from now when I get a website)

or use an already existing script that doesn't need anything but text inserted, eg gallery, coppermine etc.

My two sites both made in Front Page. Just a temporary fix until a friend makes the page professionally.

My site is a mess with layers and crap... But don't know any better, so hopefully soon it will look ok.

Frontpage actually has a LOT of features that Dreamweaver has. I have both programs and actually prefer FP 2003. Does everything I need and more. Just my opinion though. My site was created with it and if I ever need to make quick changes I just update the Design Template and reapply it to the entire site.....done.
Cheers!

Frontpage I never learnt. I figured it would take the same effort to learn html - its just a markup language -HyperText-Mark-Up_Language. ie, kindergarten coding! IMHO its why the web took off - its so straightforward. Granted, higher level functions and gimmickry is "out there" with stuff like dynamic html, php shopping cart dbase pages etc, but if you need that stuff you'd best pay someone to do it and claim it as a business cost. For album or glorified business card websites, its not that hard to wing it yourself.

FP puts alot of junk code in your pages................

Will it work...........Yes!

Just depends on your needs.

Dreamweaver it awesome...............GoLive is o k too.

The nice think about FP, it uses a lot of the same "keys" as with other MS programs.........so for most, it makes it more familiar.

Good Luck!

Frontpage is fine until you have to get into the actual code to fix something. UGH!

Dreamweaver is much better imho. It lays down the code in an organized manner, like it should be. Of course I just use it to see the progress as I write most of the code manally.

Layers are your friend.....

I haven't dealt with frontpage for years, but from what I remember, it added alot of code to your code and made is so you had to have a certain server to run that code. What a mess.

Stick with Dreamweaver or buy a template. Blogger is good as well.

Thanks for all the help.

It looks like I will just buy a template, any thoughts on where to find the best ones? It seems all the sites I go to have the same templates?

Maybe start looking at internet.com or webdeveloper.com

Last night while searching goolge for something else I ran across this site strange color combos but that could be changed if you keep hitting the refresh button you might see a layout you like.It says you never see the same template again.
Heres the site:

Thanks, those are just way to generic. I bought a template and my web guy has it. We are going to make a few changes to it. I'm hoping it will be up in a week or so.

Look into NetObjects Fusion. Simpler to use than Frontpage, and you can easily add Flash.

I can only reiterate the above comments. FrontPage is OK for small projects, but when the need arises to change things at code level, then it starts to get a bit messy. Also, FrontPage adds code which you don’t need. It typically assumes a Microsoft environment. Also, it is funny how one can almost immediately spot a web site built in FrontPage!

Dreamweaver is a much better tool, but it is more expensive.

I personally am not such a big fan of flash. There seems to be a much bigger overhead associated with flash built applications.

If you have time, take a look at my site. It uses a combination of HTML, Javascript and PHP.

All I can suggest is that you have a look around to get some ideas of how you page/site could look.

My site was also built with FP (FP2003) and I don't think it has a huge FP feel to it. Nothing against Ray above but his site has a bit more feel of FP then I was expecting.
If you know what you're doing, and really get into the program, you can do just about anything that Dreamweaver does. I've used BOTH!! Yes, FP has some extra code but if you can read code and understand Microsofts intentions, then it's pretty easy to manipulate it. Anyway, just my two cents...

newgenphoto - I had a look at your site and must say it looks good. It certainly does not have a FP feel to it. I have seen many sites using simpleviewer, it looks like you are using a different colour scheme / template than the other sites.

Regarding my site, I have concentrated my effort on development. The site is database driven which means that I am able to quite easily use my images in various applications. If you look at the E-Cards app. you will see the option of sending a slideshow to your recipient. I personally have not seen anything like that before.

Also, the fact that my site, or any other site that is database driven, means that it is quite easy to integrate a shopping cart. Probably some of us want to sell our pictures.

I used Dreamweaver to develop the site. Do you really think the site has a FP feel to it? In the near future, the site will offer the option of selecting alternative styles.

At the end of the day, it all depends what you want! ;)

Ray - sorry if it came out like that. DB driven sites are really the way to go and you've done a great job on it. You really know how to incorporate that into your site and it shows. I don't have the working knowladge to use .asp/php/ or what have you. I just get by with forms to be honest! HAHA
I just think your site, with the tools you are using, could be MUCH nicer looking. Especially with your knowledge with code. It's very clean looking though and I do like that.

As far as the simplewiewer (which I LOVE!!!!!!!) goes, I build my gallaries through Porta and then I actually open the index.html page in FP. I strip out everything that simpleviewer creates except for the actual flash file. I then just set my background, make the flash a transparent file and whalla.....done. It takes me like 5 minutes if that. Very simple to use.

I like what you have done!

Thank you...it took me about 3 hours to build the site from scratch. It was very easy to do but with all web design, practice is key. Knowing the software really helps too and having an idea already in your head when you go to design is essential.

Mine (in sig) is made partially with frontpage, partially with photoshop and partially with manual coding. I don't know if it helps.
