Perhaps another really newbie question.....
Why when my in camera readings say that exposure is spot on, do I end up with this. (Pic exactly as shot with no PP)

In general terms, the camera will try to average the scene to 18% grey. It will underexpose white, and overexpose if there's a lot of black in the frame.

Shots like this call for some +EC.
