View Full Version : Strange image display problems

For a few months now I have been having this really strange image display problem on about 10% of the posts with images. Instead of getting the photos, I get an image that says what the name of the image is instead. It's not text because I cannot select it, and if I right click it I can do Copy Image and Copy Image Location so it's definitely an image of some sort. This is happening in Firefox and Internet Explorer.

On this particular post someone else posted that they can't see the images, but I've seen other posts where people are commenting on the images and I only get this text so there is definitely something strange going on.

Well, I notice, in the same thread, StevenRaith can't see the pictures, too.

You probably don't want to hear this - but I can see them just fine. Mind you, I have only just reinstalled Windoze on this machine and Internet Explorer hasn't learned any bad tricks yet.

I don't have any suggestions for you on how to fix your problem or what may be wrong.

Silly question but how long is it since you cleared your cache and/or rebooted your computer?

Your IE pic shows an effect I did get from time to time. Zapping the cache (temp files) and rebooting seemed to work for me.

Hi chaps.

Just got a PM from Phil regarding this, clicked on the link to the relevant thread and the picutres are there! No reboots or cache clearing, but Kiwibloke has a point - worth trying.

I am running Firefox with Fasterfox - wondering if the precaching might be affecting it? I have mine set to MAX EVERYTHING FO SHO.

Might be that my PC is outdoing the max number of connections to the server from my IP and not allowing it do D/L the images till I have only plain text on, or summink.

I'm a bit slaughtered on Carlsberg tho so my suggestions my not be that accurate...

Thanks for the suggestions, but still no good. I cleared all my Firefox and IE cookies and temp files, rebooted, disabled my Kerio and Windows firewalls and I still have the same problem. I think it happens on all images that are attachments hosted on the POTN server, and the only ones I can see are with IMG tags hosted elsewhere.

Hmm.

Do you go through aproxy? Have you accidentally blocked POTN image server from FF/Windows Firewall etc?

Anyone knwo the POTN phot server IP addy? Might be wroth making sure than POTN and the IP for it are on teh 'exeptions' list on any privacy/sntismut/etc addons/extensions you have.

If that doesn't work, my patented suggestion to solve this problem is to flip out NINJA STYLE, kill everyone in a five mile radious, then set fire to yourself to prove you are serious.

HTH :)

One drunken Mr Raith :)

If you log in to http://photography-on-the.net/forum it does not mean you are logged to http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum and vice versa so in unlogged address you have no permission to view attachments.

In detail: because of historical reasons the "official" forum URL is http://photography-on-the.net/forum (without the www). Because the forum software is set to have that as root URL, all internal links direct to that base address. So I advice you to preferably log in to http://photography-on-the.net/forum to avoid any such problems.

Yep, that's it!!!! My shortcut to POTN is www.photography-on-the.net.

I just figured it out in a completely convoluted way. I copied the image location and pasted it into the URL, and like you said, it claimed I was not logged in. I was then redirected to the page without the www, logged in there and now all the images work.

Thanks. I was about to take Steve's last advice, but lucky for me (and everyone in a 5 mile radius) the problem is solved.

Bit late mate, I polished them off last night and am now regretting it.

Have change my bookmarks with regard to Pekkas advice and bang, it works. I never noticed it last night, but it asked me to log in once I clicked the non-www thingy [can't remmber how I did that mind] even though I was 'already logged in' on teh www site.

Is it possible to force redirect the http://www.photo-etc.com to the http://photoetc URL to prevent these problems in future? We stuff aint my bag really but I'd assume it's possible?
