For fashion the 18-55 probably wouldnt really cut it, it's a medicore lens.

Is money an issue?

If your planning on Fashion, the lens will cost more then your new camera. I highly suggest the 70-200 2.8 IS.

Why a $1600 lens?

Speed, the 2.8 will allow a wide variety of lighting conditions and help you to really provide focus on your subject with great OOF backgrounds.

IS, is great and will provide an extra stop or 2 again allowing for great lighting options. In addition the IS will allow for solid hand holding while shooting outside limiting the amount of extra equipment you'll need to bring with you.

70-200mm just an industry standard in the professional arena. This lens has held it's own since it was released and is very versital allowing plenty of shooting locations. In addition, as you learning framing, the 70-200 will allow you to achieve great framing options while keeping nice OOF backgrounds.

If that's a bit much for you, go for a solid mid-zoom like the Tamron 28-75 2.8 ~ $350

The Tamron is just a good as the Canon 24-78 L for 1/3rd the price. I know because I have owned both and since sold Canon and kept the Tamron.

I would also recommend the Canon 50 1.4, it's another AWESOME piece of glass. Spend the extra mony and pass on the 1.8 version.

there's a £180-200 difference between the 50 1.4 and 50 1.8, seems a bit silly to spend that much when your starting..

I'm new to the DSLR world myself and have virtually no experience with other lenses, but I bought the Tamron 28-75 2.8 on the basis of reviews, which are overwhelmingly positive, and have been extremely happy with the results. Good luck.
