View Full Version : LCD Screen Hinge Failure

I now have had the image reversing function on two different Pro90's fail. What happens is that when the screen is pointed away from the user the image reversing fails to work and when the screen is folded back against the camera in a viewable position it switches itself off. I sent the first camera off to Canon for repair and they "lost" it. They supplied me with a new G5 as a consolation but I find it a poor substitute.
I bought a second hand Pro90 and have found that it has the same problem. The second camera has a noticeably sloppy feel about the hinge mechanism.
I think that the screen mechanism has been strained and the switch or whatever that reverses the image has been dislodged or broken.
I am reluctant to send my second camera off to Canon for repair for obvious reasons.
Can anyine advise if they have had similar problems and if they know of a simple fix.
I suggest that this problem might also occur in the "G" range cameras as well as they seem to have an identical hinge mechanism.

If you carefully take out the two screws and remove the plastic hinge cover it is possible to see the actual hinge mechanism. A protrusion on the centre of the hinge works a micro-switch.

What had happened in this camera is that the fixing screw that held the hinge in place had worked loose. It actually was only being held in place by the hinge cover. This was why the screen felt "sloppy".

The free movement of the hinge had in fact broken one of the micro-wires to the reversing switch.

Consequently the image reversing function failed.

Replacing the screw to "fix" the hinge was a minor job.

Repairing the wire is an exercise in manual dexterity, keen eyesight and electronic connection skill. I am a little lacking in all these functions but will make an attempt when I have the time to put up with a fair bit of frustration.

The G5 mechanism is greatly different under the hood -

Canon may well have had more than one problem with a failure in this area and have completely redesigned the 'G" series hinge (at least by the G5). It includes a plastic carrier for the wiring loom to prevent it from being moved around by the flexing of the hinge.
