Has anybody compared both cameras? I found a lot of reviews on the SD9, but I wasn't just as impressed with it as I was with even the Nikon D100...
So, what do you think of the SD9?

When it was first announced and got big press in most of the major photo publications because of its new tech Foveon X3 sensor, I could hardly wait for it to come out. I thought it was THE DSLR for me. I was naive then and knew next to nothing about digital photography (not that it's any different now :) ). All I knew then was that I wanted a DSLR and it had to be affordable and the Sigma fit that bill very well. Now I'm glad that the SD9 wasn't in full production then and that the 10D came out when it did. I couldn't be a happier camper. I'm probably still naive in many ways about this digital photography business but there's no doubting it, you can't get a happier camper than me...unless, of course you're looking at another 10D owner. :D
But, just for the record, I think the Foveon X3 technology has great potential, if a company like Canon or Nikon got hold of it and did their "magic" to it.

What changed your mind about it?

I was inches from buying a Sigma SD9. The things that kept me from buying it are that, 1) the only company that makes glass for it is simga and I haven't had a good track record with sigma glass. 2) I have a huge investment in Canon Glass. So I waited for the 10D.
For what it is I am sure it's a great camera. Canoga Camera has them on sale for $1099.USD if I am not mistaken. That's almost cheap enough just to buy one and try it out.
What do you say Mcouper? Wanna be our guniea pig?

For me it was the fact that the SD9 required Sigma lenses. At the time I had no "lens inventory", but I knew I was not going to limit my self to only Sigma.
The Foveon X3 sensor was very exciting, but this was one place I did not want to be on the leading edge of technology.
Think about the following:
Why is no one else using it? perhaps high cost/royalty fees from the patent owners.
Or could it be that companies Canon/Nikon have existing investment in production of CCD or CMOS chips. (or long term supplier contracts)
At this point it's a lonely chip in DSLR land. Check out their forums (very low activity...)
Remember, Betamax format tape was technically better than VHS, but which one won in the market place?

Nothing. A better affordable camera came along in the form of a Canon 10D. :)

I certainly don't wanna be a guinea pig! That's why I asked the question in the first place :)
Honestly though, I am thinking of getting rid of the 10D. I know it's absolutely one of the top 5 in the world of DSLR, but there's something I don't like about it, and I know not what it is..
I know that before Christmas I'm gonna have a third camera, and I'm leaning a lot towards the (unproven) Sony DSC-F828, but not just because of the pixel count. I like Sony's low light shooting capabilities, size, picture quality, and now, CFII support. I really don't care much about interchangeable lenses, as long as I got myself covered for what I need. But I'm just afraid I could be heading backwards (hardware-wise) after using the 10D. So I thought about the SD9 as an alternative. I'm even thinking about dumping digital altogether, but I don't have the guts/experience nor the expenses of film..

I was allready sold on Canon after the D30 was introduced. That was what got me interested in a DSLR,. and in reading up on a comparing it to others (Fuji, Kodak, and Nikon at the time) I began to realize that making a decision on a camera where an SLR was concerned, was a much larger decision about systems and lenses.
So that narrowed things down easily to again, Nikon or Canon,. (or Fuji on the Nikon Mount)
I was immediately drawn to Canon for its lenses, they are IMO a superior selection to the Nikon lens selection.
When the Sigma was announced too was intrigued,. especially given its lower price than the Nikon's Fuji's and the D60 at the time,. but I dismissed it rather quickly. If I had a Canon or Nikon I could still have all the Sigma lenses plus the OEM lenses of Canon,. (not to mention other e3rd party lenses)
So the Sigma for me was never in the running.
But here are some drawbacks,
No onboard flash ?
No jpeg storage (raw only)
